Chapter 1:
“We’re playing Zelda, and that’s final”
“Please, we’re playing Mario Kart.”
“What are you, 5? Give up already, Gabe. You know I’ll always win.”
“Please honey, I’m five? Look at yourself.”
“Oh, go away already.” Logan said, picking up a pillow and launching it at her best friend.
“You really want to go me, huh?” Gabriel said, standing up with his arms out.
“I will, and I’ll win.”
“Please. You’re so full of it.”
“So are you.”
“We’re even then?” He said, holding out his hand.
“Even.” She said, shaking his hand.
“How about we just watch a movie?”
“After, I have a quick break.” Logan said, getting up and grabbing her cigarette packet off the coffee table.
“Can I please have one; I’m all out at this current moment.”
“Depends,” Logan said, a smile playing on her face.
“Depends? On what?”
“Let me pick the movie.”
She heard him laugh and looked up at him. His clear blue eyes showing amusement.
“Ok, you can have ONE” She said, opening the front door and walking out.
“Thank you, dear best friend.” He said, doing a little bow and following her.
Logan sat down on the steps, looking down the long and narrow street.
She always smoked outside. Even though she lived only with Gabriel, she felt as though it was rude to smoke in her house. The house her parents had lived in only two years ago. The thought of her deceased parents dampened her mood, and Gabriel noticed.
“What’s wrong?” He asked, looking at her with curiosity in his eyes.
“I just thought of something that I didn’t want to.”
“It’s alright hunnie.” He said, wrapping his arms around her.
She took a cigarette out of the packet, placing it to her lips and lighting it. She drew in a breath, inhaling the smoke and holding it.
“What are you going to do tomorrow?” Gabe suddenly said, breaking the peaceful silence.
She breathed out, letting the smoke leave her system.
“What do you mean?”
“About tomorrow, you know. A new school year and shit”
“What I always do --survive.”
“It’s going to be different this year.”
Logan looked up at her best friend. He looked back down at her, with concern on his face.
“I know; I just wish you could come with me.”
“You and me both”
She looked away, taking another drag of her smoke. Suddenly Gabriel looked at her, his entire face lighting up. He had a plan.
“What, what did you think of now?” Logan asked, releasing the smoke from her mouth.
“You know, I do go to a private school.”
