I made this as an entry for the art contest by cuteness is the key. I'll make a list with collection books so you can check it out.
Anyways...This is supposed to be a Merida Genderbend from the film 'Brave'. I really love her character and design and she was the first character I actually thought of as I read the contest theme.
At first I wanted to draw Merido/Merry/*insert cool name here* as a really tough and strong boy since Merida is basically a boyish girl who doesn't like to depend on anyone. But then again a boyish boy would ruin the reason why Merida is Merida. In my opinion she is supposed to mix up these whole gender rules and stuff so I tried to make Meridas male version to look more fragile. As Merry would be a guy who is supposed to win the princess but fails because he is only good at archery since that doesn't require as much strenght as throwing trees.
But on the other hand I couldn't make him look too week. This is why focused on his stubborn or playful side since Merida is also a character who loves to play around.Wow... I wrote way too much^-^
Anyways... I wanted to draw a full body version of it with a kilt but I was afraid to draw the pattern because that's a bit out of my usual comfort zone.I used:
- HB Pencil for the sketch
- Sakura Pigma Microns 05 for the outlines
- STAEDTLER ergo soft colored pencils
- uni-ball figno for the highlight in the eyes
