The Hearing

Harmony. That is my name. It suits me. I am against perfection. I always sing a different note that makes the world a more beautiful place.

The government hates me for that. They love order. Everyone's home is exactly the same. Everyone dies at the same age. Everyone has a job for their whole life. No crimes are committed.

"Harmony. Honey. Wildfire," a deep voice spits out as if a foul taste in his mouth, "What did you see?" Blinding light flashes in my eyes. A man with a serious face sits in front of me. His eyes are like daggers, prying out any courage that I have left in me. A long scar across his face cuts his face in half. I can already tell why they chose this man to be an interrogator.

"What did you see?" he said more aggressively. I jumped in my seat. I didn't want to say, I knew that I would be punished. I wasn't supposed to be down there. If it hadn't been for my brother, Wren, they wouldn't have seen the black cloaked figure sneaking around the government headquarters. I had been hacking the keypad when my goody-two-shoes brother called me. Now I was sitting there trying to get in.

"I don't know," I mumbled, looking down so that I wouldn't see the furious look on the man's face. Just then, the door clicked open. The clicking of heels echoed in the hollow room. I glanced up to see a woman who almost looked like one of those beautiful nurses.

"Thank you, Mattias," she said, nodding at the man. He grunted then left the room. She sat down with one of those plastic smiles on her face. "Talk to me," she said, folding her hands in her lap. I wanted to tell her I didn't need a Barbie doll to help me.

Especially not the one that turned me in... my own mother.
