Your walk to the Avengers tour was slow and each step you took you held doubts whether or not leaving him was the best option in your current situation. Your decision was spontaneous, you didn't know what else to do. All you knew was that you had to get out of there. You had to get away from him.
Sure, you loved him, you'd been together with him for almost a year now, but you weren't sure that he felt the same way he did last month. The relationship started off with a spark and was filled with happiness, joy and love and now all those important aspects of a relationship had faded away leaving anger, negativity and violence. There were very few spurts of joy but you had long found them occurring less and less.
You puffed a breath of air into your hands, trying to warm yourself up as walked through the 30 degree Manhattan weather, with nothing more than a thin t-shirt, pajama shorts and nothing to cover the growing bruise grazing your eyebrow and eye socket. You regretted not taking anything with you. You didn't know when you were going back. But you knew you had to keep this quiet from the Avengers, especially Bucky.
Now standing in front of the Avengers tower, you took a moment before you opened the front doors, hoping that no one was at the front desk to alert Tony or FRIDAY of your arrival this late at night. Fortunately, luck was on your side and you were able to slip to the elevators without being noticed and you headed up to the thirtieth floor.
Quickly, you formed a cover story for your black eye. You were taking out the trash and somebody jumped you. You fought back but the guy punched you before you could get away. They would believe it, right?
The elevator dinged, alerting you that you had arrived and you stepped out cautiously. You sighed out of relief when you saw that the lights were dimmed and no one was to be seen. You then walked over to the kitchen but was stopped by a voice.
"Ms. Y/N-" FRIDAY's voice echoed through the room.
"FRIDAY, hey, could you keep this quiet? I don't want to wake anyone." You quickly interrupted the AI system and you were met with silence you nodded, silently thanking FRIDAY.
When you reached the kitchen, you grabbed a mug out of the cupboard with the plan to make a cup of tea. But, you were stopped short when you saw your appearance in the reflection of the microwave. Your hair was disheveled, messy and tangly, and you were starting to see the dark bags underneath your eyes. What really caught your attention was the bruise across your eye socket.
When you left your apartment, his apartment, it was nothing but a mere cast of purple and yellow but over the past twenty minutes it had darkened in color and turning a dark purple with hints of black and yellow and was starting to swell. You stood there for a few moments, thinking. He didn't mean to push you around, right? There had to be something you were doing wrong to make him act like this, right?
Your mother always told you that love was easy once you found the right person. And it was. For about ten months. Then it got hard. It got difficult. It started out with small remarks about your appearance or that you were working too much or hanging out the Avengers too much. Then it escalated to arguments about him accusing you of cheating. It didn't get physical until about a month ago. He would push you around, leaving small bruises, sometimes he would hit you and kick you once you were already on the ground.
You didn't realize you were crying until you choked on your breath, pulling you out of your thoughts. For god's sake, you were an Avengers. You should be able to handle him. Right?
Wrong.
You were able to calm yourself within a few minutes and you continued on making your tea with the hot water in the kettle that had been angrily beeping at you for the past few moments. Once you were done, you added a dash of milk and some honey before heading to the couch to watch a few episodes of The Office or Friends; something to get your mood up.
