Chapter 1- Him

Sometimes I'm scared to look in the mirror. I always had a habit of holding my breath in before looking. The questions were running through my mind. What will I see? Will I have food in my teeth, or just another wretched reflection?

My milky skin is what I hated most. My relatives would tease me and say that I was Draculas daughter, the joke was always old to me.

I look out the window, the view was something that I could get use to. The neighbour hood is silent except for a few kids playing soccer across the street. They seemed happy. It made me realize that they are young they have nothing to worry about. It almost makes me feel jealous. I look down and see Adrian paying the pick up truck guy.

Everything in my room reminds me of home, my bed frame, the expensive mahogany drawers, the mirror, the old rug. It makes my stomach cringe a little. The room even smelt like wood at first, but when I had settled in, my scent had follwed me, and now it smells like home.

But I should be happy, because new beginnings are suppose to be happy. Almost like giving birth when the mother sees the child for the first time.

But for me, a new house for college. What could be wrong with sleepover every-night with my best friend, partying every weekend?. But instead all I see is messes that need to be cleaned up or essays that need to be done.

"Raven."

I dropped all of my thoughts. Adrian was by the doorway.

"What." I almost hissed. I was annoyed by her constant interruptions, but she doesn't seemed to notice.

"You hungry?" was all she could say.

"No."

"Okay." It almost seemed like she was forced to ask me.

I decided to unpack the boxes sitting in the doorway. Everything thing that I hated, it reminded me of home. That's what I hate about this room, because it had the furniture from home

I first unpacked my clothes and set them in the closet and drawers. I then began to unpack my books onto my bookshelves, 'my friends' I use to call them.

I remembered how her voice was

"There must be something wrong with her, Harry!" her voiced filled with rage when she told my father that I told her to leave me alone.

"I'm sure it's nothing." he tried to calm her down. I could tell by his voice by standing behind the doorway of their bedroom and listening to their conversation that she wasn't going to 'calm down'.

"She doesn't like to talk to anybody." she said.

"What do you want me to do about it?' his voice was stern.

"We need to get her some help." my mother pleaded.

My father groaned in frustration, and I knew that was my cue to sneak back to my room. I'd never knew my father would be able to give up on me that easily.

But that was old raven, the one who cried herself to sleep, the one who use to cut herself because she loved to see the darkness of her blood. The one who's tear would sting on her scared face. weak less. She was ugly.

Things have changed, I went to the gym during the last summer I had for college, I have saved up money for a salon. I was sore, and hungry. But it was all worth it now. I may have lost weight and gained muscle my eyebrow may have looked better, but every now and then, I sometimes still feel self conscious.

After a while, I decided to come downstairs. Adrian was sitting on the kitchen counter, scrolling through her phone. It took her a while to notice me.

"Hey Ray." she said she didn't bother to look at me.

"Hi."

I suddenly decided it was time to go to bed. "Okay-so..I'm gonna go back upstairs."

"Lets go on the porch and have a drink." it didn't seem like an option coming out of her mouth, more like a demand.

I wasn't in the mood to drink, but I thought that this would be nice, going outside to drink on the porch steps with your best friend while she scrolls through her phone.

The sky was sun was setting lower but hasn't disappeared from the atmosphere yet, and the neighbour hood kids have already gone inside. The paint on our porch was chipping, the house wasn't the best compared to the other houses, but I still took pride in what was ours.

"So...do you want to paint the porch." I finally said. I couldn't stand the awkward silence.

"No."

"Oh." was all that I could say. I took a swig of my beer.

"I didn't meant it like that, we should..you know... to let the paint to unravel themselves."

"Okay." Some times I wish Adrian and I would be like we were before. Where we would insult each other without getting offended, share food or drinks without worrying about getting sick. But in her eyes when she looks at me, I'm fragile. It makes me feel, like an egg afraid to be dropped because my shell will burst and then she'll have to clean up the mess. I'm that rare egg in the carton, that never gets used or broken and get to be made into something good. Sometimes I think that she's afraid of me. All because of an misunderstanding , I became the rare egg.

"Ray." Adrian's voice disrupted me from me thoughts.

"Yes." this is probably the first time she looked up from her phone since we got outside.

"Look, new neighbours."

At first I thought what's the big deal.

I guess I didn't seem to notice the visible pick up truck. The guys piled out of the truck, and some cars pulled up. One by one, they took out the furniture, unloaded boxes. They carried out a big sign. 'A fraternity house' was the first thing that came to mind.

At first, I didn't seem to notice him at first. I guess it's the new way he wears his favorite red bandanna over his forehead now, it even seemed like his eyes turned into a different shade of blue, he'd even grew taller than the last time I'd seen him. Out of all the 7 billion people on earth. Fate has only chosen one to make me miserably. Cole springs. Will this be karma for me? I hope it's karma for him, because I've grown out of my old ugly ways. I've become a survivor from Hell.
