Reader's POV

I watched the little dark haired girl play on the swings, a soft smile turning my lips up slightly. She giggled happily, pushing her legs back and forth, going ever higher.
I felt a cold nose hit my hand and looked down to see Fred, a tawny pit bull who was the sweetest thing. I scratched behind his ear.
Suddenly, he took off. "Fred! Come back here!" I cried out after him.
He stopped at the feet of a tall, blonde man.
The man smiled, squating down by the dog as I ran up. Fred had all of this stranger's attention, and enjoyed every second of it.
"I'm so sorry, sir, Fred usually doesn't run off like that." I rambled quickly and quietly.
The man's smile stopped my speech. "It's fine. This is Fred?" He questioned in a thick, German accent.
I nodded as I took in just how good looking this man was. His blonde hair was perfectly gelled back, revealing every chiseled aspect of his face. His eyes were a crystal blue I felt I could loose myself in. I mentally shook myself as my dark haired little sister ran up.
"Who are you? Are you mean like Richard?" Molly asked bluntly.
I looked down at her, horrified. "Uh, ignore her." I stuttered before kneeling before the seven year old. "How many times have we talked about this Molly?" I asked her softly, hoping the German couldn't hear me.
She shrugged her little shoulders, her dark eyes trained on the grass we stood on.
"Molly, you know that Richard never means it right?" I asked even softer.
She shook her head. "My teacher said everyone knows what they're doing, and usually mean it at that moment."
I sighed softly. "We'll talk about this later, okay Mols?"
    She nodded.
"Go play before we have to go home." I watched quietly as she ran off. I turned back to the man who was respectfully looking away. "I am really sorry about that..." I trailed off.
"Ludwig. Ludwig Beilschmidt." He said. "It's fine. She's just cautious, a very good thing in this vorld of ours."
I nodded sadly. "She shouldn't have to be." I pushed away the sadness with my painted smile. "I'm (full name). I am really sorry about Fred though, but the worst he could do is lick you to death."
Ludwig smiled that smile again. "I'm sure." He glanced around. "It's getting late, vould you mind if I valked you and your daughter back to your home?"
"Molly's my baby sister. Uh... I'm not sure." I hesitated. Richard hated it anytime I spoke to anyone, how would he react if he saw Ludwig walking me and Molly home.
"Oh, my mistake, she looks a lot like you. Please, I insist. It's late and the streets really aren't safe." Ludwig stated.
Again, I hesitated, remembering my last friend... "No, thank you though. We have Fred, we'll be fine."
I began to turn to leave, but Ludwig grabbed my hand. "Vill I see you again?"
"Maybe. I don't know." My smile was crumbling. I wanted to see this kind man again, despite the fact of just having met him. "You probably won't want to see me again though." I muttered.
He furrowed his brow. "Vhy vould I not vant to see you again?"
I shook my head. "I need to go now. It was lovely meeting you, Ludwig. Goodbye." I put the leash on Fred and started walking, calling out to Molly as I went.

"What took you so damn long?" Richard slurred.
"T-there was traffic." I stuttered, motioning for Molly to go to her room. Thankfully, she got the message and took Fred with her.
"Traffic, huh? Why do I have such a hard time believing you?" His hand clenched and flew at me.
I crumpled to the ground as he knocked the air out from my lungs, tears slowly streaming down my cheeks. Sobs shook my body.
He grabbed my hair and ripped upward, slamming my head against the door behind me. "We've talked about lying to me, (y/n)." He hissed. He threw me to the ground and sneered at my shaking body. "Go make dinner, bitch. Just for me tonight."
I nodded, stumbling to my feet and into the kitchen to cook.

Ludwig's POV

I couldn't take my mind off of (y/n). She was beautiful and kind, but there were such dark secrets etched into her (e/c) eyes.
So that's why I was waiting in the park. I had seen her here everyday with her sister, but I had never been brave enough to walk up to her. I was so thankful Fred had run up to me. I sat on the bench she normally sat at and hoped I didn't look to expectant.
Soon (y/n) was limping slightly down the side walk as Molly ran towards me, far ahead of her. "You're the man from yesterday."
I smiled. "I am. You can call me Ludwig." I told her.
She nodded, a smile beginning to turn her lips up. "I like you. You aren't mean like Richard."
I tilted my head to the side. "Who's Richard?"
"We live with him. He's really mean to me and sissy." Molly says matter-of-factly.
"Well that's not good." My eyes drifted to (y/n)'s limping gait that had now quickened.
"Molly? Why don't you go play, sweetie?" She said softly.
The girl nodded and ran off.
(Y/n) shook her head. "I'm sorry if she bothered you."
"It's okay. I like kids. Do you vant to sit?" I scooted over slightly.
She nodded and slowly sat down, wincing slightly as she went. "Thank you."
"Your velcome. Are you okay, (y/n)?" I asked softly, looking her over carefully.
She got an alarmed look. "W-what? Yeah, I-I'm fine. W-why do you ask?" Her voice wavered.
"You don't look okay." I say.
She shook her head, regaining her composure. "I'm fine."
I frowned at her, not really believing her but not brave enough to contradict her either.
We met at the park for weeks. Some days (y/n) was open and somewhat cheerful, others she was closed off and secretive. On those days, she moved funny.
One day, she didn't come out.
I sat there for hours, close to sundown, waiting for the woman I had fallen in love with. I blinked. Love?
I let the words roll off my tongue, enjoying the way they sounded. Somehow, along the way, I had fallen for (y/n).
I heard quick footsteps approaching and looked up in hope. Those hopes were shattered when I realized they belonged to a child... wait. "Molly? Vhat are you doing out here by yourself?" I called out to her, standing and approaching her as she came to a standstill.
That's when I noticed the angry bruise on her cheek and the tears falling from her eyes as silent sobs shook her small frame.
I quickly knelt down in front of her, pulling the girl into my arms as her sobs became audible. Fear pooled in the pit of my stomach as I attempted to calm the girl.
"Vhat happened, Molly?" I asked softly once her sobs had subsided to silent tears.
Her head stayed buried in my chest as she spoke. "Richard was really mean this time." She hiccuped. "I accidentally spilt my milk on the table and he-he hit me! (Y/n) pushed me back before anything else happened and told me to go to the park."
My grip tightened slightly. "Do you know if she's okay?"
Molly shook her dark head. "I don't know.... she was already hurt from last night when we got home late again." She looked up at me then. "Help her. Please. Get her away from him."
I nodded, my jaw tight. "I vill."
Molly lead me back to their apartment building.
We got to the door just as a gunshot sounded, followed by a scream. I pushed Molly back and kicked the door down, taking in the scene quickly.
(Y/n) lay badly beat up on the floor, reaching out for Fred who wasn't moving. A man stood with his back to me, reloading his gun.
I rushed forward and tackled him to the ground. We fought for the gun, and it went off again. Pain flared int side, but ignored it as I drew back and hit the man in the head with as much force as possible. He blacked out.
I moved over to (y/n), checking her over for serious injuries. There were a few cuts on her and very many bruises, as well as her ankle being twisted at a slightly unnatural angle. She slowly sat up and swayed slightly.
I wrapped an arm around her. "Are you okay?"
"I am now." She mumbled into my chest. "But Fred..."
My eyes went to the dog and saw a shallow graze of a bullet path digging into his shoulder. Then I looked at who I assumed was Richard to see a large bite mark in his forearm. I tore off some of the bottom of my shirt and stopped the bloodflow.
"He should be okay. It vasn't deep."
Molly ran in towards her older sister and wrapped her in a hug. They both stared at Richard.
"You're more than welcome to stay with me, (y/n). I have plenty of room."
She looked up at me with wide eyes. "A-are you sure? I really w-wouldn't want to be a burden to you..."
Molly beat me to answering. "I'm gonna go with him. I like him. He's nice." She looked over her sister. "Besides, you like him and he likes you." We both flushed red at this statement.
The seven year old went to Fred, leaving us somewhat alone.
(Y/n) stared at the ground, her cheeks still a bright red. She... liked me back?
My resolve hardened. I wouldn't let anything bad happen to her again. "C'mon. Let's get you put of here."

Two weeks later
Reader's POV

I sat on the couch, watching Ludwig play with both Fred and Molly. Molly's face was flushed from laughter and suppressed giggles continued to spill from her lips.
I laughed as she failed to tackle the German, only to end up upside down over his shoulder as Fred barked at their feet.
"(Y/N)!!! HAHA-HELP!" Molly laughed as Ludwig began to tickle her feet.
"Sorry, Mols, you got yourself in that predicament." I laughed as he set her down only to have Fred jump on her and lick her to death.
"Are you enjoying yourself there?" Ludwig asked with a look in his eyes.
"Yes, yes I am." I said, throwing my normal, scared wariness away. That belonged to an old life, not this one.
He grinned. He began to take steps toward me and my eyes widened in mock horror as he scooped me up. A squeal escaped me as I weakly attempted to escape.
Quite frankly, I didn't want to escape.
I settled down, smiling up at him.
Vaguely I heard Molly run to the backyard with Fred on her heels.
     "Thank you." I whispered quietly.
Ludwig nodded, his grin fading back to a small smile. "Anything for you and your sister."
My smile widened as he let me on my feet. I kissed his cheek, surprising him. "If you want more, you'll have to catch me." I took off running, but nowhere near the speed I actually had.
