Chapter Two Elli’s POV
I watched from my seat on the train as Suzann froze on the steps while boarding the train. I had no idea the reason she was stalling. Why didn’t she just hurry aboard? We had been on this horrible train for three days already! Tomorrow we would be free of the muggy over-used air. To say I was looking forward to this is a major understatement.
I was also anxious to see Elizabet and her family. The picture of her husband and her on her wedding day was the only image I had to base what they all might look like from. Of course that didn’t help me imagine my nephew see-in as she was still pregnant at the time the photo was taken.
The day we had received the photo and letter I was overjoyed. I had never seen a photograph before. Only those who were substantially wealthy had photos taken of them. Not that we were vastly poor, mama and papa just didn’t believe in wasting money on a piece of paper that held a person’s likeness on it. It was most definitely a sight to see! Momma nearly fainted. I have never seen her cry, but for the first time she looked happy for Liza. I know I was.
“Sorry Ell, I got caught behind some ladies admiring Mrs. Jones new hat she just purchased”
“Suzann, you do know I can tell when you are not telling me the truth?”
“Ell, I!”
“Oh hush! I saw that something out there caught your eye. Do you plan to tell me what or who it was?”
Suzann looked at me with mischief in her eyes. “Ell, if I tell you, you have to promise not to tell momma when we get home!”
“Sue, why do I get the feeling I am not going to like this?”
Antony’s POV
What the hell does that fool think he is doing? This is why we had to leave home to begin with. Jeremiah and his damn roving eye. Every pretty little thing in a skirt is fair game! We barely made it out of El Paso without a double shot gun wedding because he just couldn’t keep his damn mouth and pants shut!
Maybe once we get home and tell Uncle Taylor and Sheriff Sam what we heard about that spineless piece of nothing Mathews life will return to normal; maybe settle down on Pa’s ranch, marry a nice girl. I wonder if James will rethink his thoughts on my marry’in Missy. She was always a sight for sore eyes. Dressed up in her fancy dresses, even if it wasn’t a church going day or a day of some kind of celebration. Yet, I suppose one could do that if’in their Pa had the money to buy one for every day of the week! However, that would all change if we were to marry; see’in as I would never be able to buy all of those fancy dresses for her. So maybe Missy wouldn’t be the one to settle down with. She would prolly expect me to sell my portion of the ranch and move into town and become a banker or something.
Ha! Like that would ever happen! Only pompous little prigs like Mathews went into banking. Of course, it was pretty smart on his part to take money from everyone’s safety deposit boxes and stash it in his own. Made quite a bit’o cash that’a ways, until he thought he was gonna get caught. High-tailed it outta town, faster than a stallion who’s caught wind of a filly, he did, but not afore settin me and Jeremiah to take the fall. Good thing we was with Sam at the time Jensen saw the little snake sneaking out of the bank with all of his hidden lout.
Ah hell! I suppose I’ll have to settle for Jane. She is a sweet girl, pretty, and can bake a pie that just the smell makes your mouth water!
“Anton! Anton! Anton, you cur! Come back to the present and stop thinking about that prissy little Missy!”
“Jer, can’t a man be alone with his thoughts for one moment? I swear you are the worst person to travel with!”
“Anton, what has your britches in a twist? A man would think you were sore at him!”
“Just leave it, Jer.”
