"Molly, are you awake?" said Toby.
"Yes, daddy," she replied in a soft voice.
"You have to get ready for your first day at elementary school! Are you excited?" he said enthusiastically.
"Will Mommy be there?" she said.
"No, Mommy's with somebody else now."
"Are you with somebody else now?"
"No, but I hope they'll be some nice mommies at your school and I could date one of them! Haha, just kidding," he said, chuckling.
"Daddy, I'm nervous for elementary school. What if nobody likes me?" she said, frowning.
"Aw, honey, you're a sweetheart, everybody will like you. But you'll make a bad first impression if you turn up late! Will you go brush your teeth and wash your face while I go make your breakfast?" he asked.
"Yes, daddy,"
**Molly has done her teeth and face and Toby's made lunch**
"What do you want to wear today, Molly?"
"Something pretty with flowers on it. Pink!" Pink was her favourite colour.
"What about this white dress with pink flowers on it? You can wear this headband too! Look, it says 'Molly' on it!"
"What shoes should I wear?" she asked while putting the dress on.
"What about this white Converse? I'm sure you'll get to go outside and run about. It's a beautiful day today,"
**on the way to school**
"Daddy, what will I do at elementary school?"
"Well, I checked the first grade curriculum on the website. You'll do Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies."
"What about playing?"
"You'll play at Recess and after you've eaten your lunch," he said.
"What do I have for lunch?" she asked inquiringly.
"Ham sandwich, yogurt, and a cup of iced coffee," he knew she was only five years old, but she loved coffee more than he loved Yvonne.
"Ooh, gotta get that COFFEEEEEEE!" she shouted.
They had just walked around the corner and were facing the school. "Molly, your friends will hear you!!" he laughed.
"I don't mind. I want them to know that coffee is so good! Can we go in and meet my teacher now?" she asked."Hello, I'm Mrs Marin, your daughter's first grade teacher. What are your names?"
"Uh, I'm Toby Cavanaugh, and this is my daughter, Molly Cavanaugh-Phillips," he hated that she still had Yvonne's second name.
"Hello, Molly! Why don't you and your daddy come inside with me?!"
"Okay," she replied, shyly.
"So, every child in the first and second grade get a backpack with their name on it and the school's name on it. What's your favourite colour, Molly?" said Mrs Marin.
"Pink," she said, still shy.
"Ok. This afternoon you will go home with a pink backpack that says 'Molly Cavanaugh-Phillips, Rosewood Elementary School'. Does that sound cool?!"
"No."
"Why not, Mol?" asked Toby.
"It will say Phillips on it. I don't want mommy's name on it, Daddy. She was a bad mommy." she whispered.
"But that's your name, Molly," he whispered back.
"Please don't let them put Phillips on it, Daddy!" she whispered, quite loudly that Mrs Marin could hear it.
"Oh, Mr Cavanaugh, we have had many kids come through this door with divorced parents, and many have said they don't want their mom or dad's name on their backpack. It's okay, it'll just be Molly Cavanaugh," she smiled sweetly.
"Yay!" Molly said, her shyness gone.
"There's a girl, over there, Mr Cavanaugh," pointing to a brown-haired girl with her mother, "Her backpack says Verity Hastings, not Verity Hastings-Rivers. Maybe Molly and Verity can hang out, seeing as they have something in common. Ms Hastings!" she said, waving her hand at the girl's mother.
"Hello," said Verity to Molly.
"Hello. Are you Verity Hastings?" Molly asked.
"Yes. I hate the name Rivers! My daddy had that second name, and cheated on my mommy. So I hate my daddy and his second name!"
"I hate my mommy's name too. I want my real name to be Molly Cavanaugh. No 'Phillips'."
"You and your daddy have to go to the courthouse for that. My mommy told me." she said.
**meanwhile**
"Hi, I'm Spencer," she said.
"I'm Toby. Cavanaugh. It seems like our daughters have something in common!" he laughed.
"Yeah!" she giggled.
"Okay, can all the children sit on the floor and their parents can sit on the chairs behind! Alright. So, happy first day of first grade! First grade is easy. Today we're doing Math and Reading and Writing. Each of you get your own pencil case that are being handed out by Mr Montgomery, the 1st Grade assistant. Parents, on Fridays, we have parent-teacher meetings where we discuss how your child has done that week. Meanwhile, the children have their fun session, and then after that, we have the Week Awards where we present the 2 Most Independent 1st Graders, the 2 nicest 1st Graders and the 2 Most Outstanding Overall 1st Graders. There will be one boy and one girl picked for each award. They get a trophy and a certificate. They can only win one award a week. Any questions? No. Okay, parents can leave now." said Mrs Marin.**all the parents left**
**end of school day**
"So, Molly, how was your first day of first grade?" Toby asked.
"AWESOME! I made friends with Verity Hastings, Lucy Fields, Michael Fitzgerald and Liam Kingston," she replied.
"What did you do?" he asked.
"We had Math, Reading and Writing. Math was good but I didn't like reading and writing. In Math, we had to learn how to add and subtract numbers 1 to 20. Mrs Marin said I was the best in the class! Verity seemed to get a little jealous. I think she comes from a competitive family. She's good at Reading and Writing though. We read a book called The Enchanted Forest, and then we had to write a story about if we went to the Enchanted Forest. I wrote that I would cut all the trees down and make carpentry. Mrs Marin said that was bad to write about because we need trees to help us keep alive," she said.
"You know, I used to be a carpenter," said Toby, "When your mommy got pregnant with you, we were in college, and she had a mental breakdown, and was diagnosed with severe depression, so I built her a house,"
"A whole house? But did she use it?"
"No. She still doesn't know about it. I couldn't tell her because she was sent to Radley Sanitarium because of her depression. You know Radley don't you? It's not a sanitarium anymore, it's a hotel," he replied.
"What happened to the sanitarium?"
"A teenager named Charlotte killed all the patients. Including herself. So, a lady called Ashley turned it into a hotel,"
"But daddy!" she moaned.
"What?!"
"The new mental people don't have a place to go," she said.
"Oh, they do. There's a place not far from here called Ravenswood. A mental place there opened a year ago, called Welby State Psychriatic Hospital. Do you have any more questions to ask me?"
"Yes, I have one. Can we go home now?"
**when they get home**
"Molly, did you get any homework?" Toby asked.
"Yes I did. I have 3 assignments. I have to complete this Add & Subtract recap sheet, then read the first page of the Reading Comprehension book, then write a story about the first day of first grade," she replied.
"Wow, that's a lot of homework for the first day!" he exclaimed.
"Verity says if we get a lot of homework it keeps our minds focused."
"Okay. Let's look at Math first!" he said.
"I can do math. It's easy." she said, doing her math homework, "Daddy, can you teach me how to do algebra?" she added.
"Molly, you're five years old, you start studying algebra in high school,"
"How long is that?"
"Till you go to high school? Well, you start high school in 9th grade, and you are fourteen years old in 9th grade, so that would be.. nine years,"
"NINE YEARS! That's soo long!"
"Well, let's concentrate on what you're doing at five years old. In first grade. Ok, have you finished your math?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Ok. Read the page in your book while I call your teacher. I need to ask her what time my parent-teacher meeting is on Friday,"**after the phone call**
"Daddy, I don't know what to write,"
"When is this homework due?"
"Thursday, Mrs Marin said she's going to review them on Thursday night and it will help her for what to say to the parents on Friday,"
"Ok. Well, you have two more days to do it. Why don't you go play while I make dinner?"
"Okay, daddy!"
There's a knock at the door.
"Be there in a minute!" said Toby, running to the door.
"Hello, Mr Cavanaugh, may we come in?" said Ms Hastings.
"Uh, sure." he said, minding out of the way so they could walk in, "Sorry, I'm just cooking dinner,"
"I'm sorry, we'll come back later, come on Verity, darling," she said, putting her coat back on.
"No, no, it's okay. Actually, would you like to have some? I always cook too much, and Molly's a fussy eater,"
"Uh, yeah, sure!" she said, happily. "Where is Molly?"
"She's upstairs, one second. Molly, come down, we have visitors!" he shouted up the stairs.
She jumped down two at a time. "V-Dog!"
"M-Dog!" Verity and Molly ran up to each other in a 'man hug' and then looked at their parents, smiling to their ears.Heyyyy!!! Shannon here.
This is my first Spoby fanfic, I think. Did you like the first chapter? I hope so. The next one will be Toby and Spencer's dinner (with Molly and Verity), and it'll be Spencer's P.O.V. (well, not really, but it'll be what Spencer says and does, and then what happens when they go home) and it'll be posted around 9pm today, U.K. time. If you're not from the U.K., it's 6:12p.m., so work out what time it is in about three hours.
