"So this isn't part of the course but can someone tell me what the problem may be of growing the same type of crop in the same spot of soil?" my biology teacher asked.
I began to imagine the same crop being grown in the same spot and considering the fact that different plants take up different amounts of certain nutrients well...
"Wouldn't that make the soil become deficient in that certain nutrient that the plant takes up miss?" I wondered genuinely with my question.
"Exactly Faith!" Miss Demure smiled widely at me.
"That's exactly why growing the same plant in the same spot for lengthy periods of time isn't good. Then you have to use artificial things such as soils with special supple-" but poor Miss Demure was cut short with the ringing of the bell which caused every senior to pack up before she could even finish.
"Okay but before you all run out on me next week we are going to be looking at the cells of plants!"
I only packed up when Miss Demure had finished talking. I felt sorry for the fact that teachers had to get used to being ignored.
As I packed the last of my belongings into my bag and I turned to start walking I was startled by a smiling girl standing in front of me "Hi" she smiled.
She must have seen my surprised reaction because she quickly added "Sorry I didn't mean to scare you!" I smiled back but still was wary why this girl had chosen to approach me.
"Hi" I replied back and began to slowly walk and she began to walk with me out of our class.
"You're so smart, I mean the way you answered that question Miss Demure asked, I couldn't have even thought of that. How did you?"
I pondered was this what she was here for? To ask me what the secret to my smartness was? But you could just tell from the way she smiled and her eyes she was being genuine. There was nothing devious about her smile or the way she wanted to pay attention to what I was saying. Well at least my people reading skills that I had honed over the years were telling me that she was in fact genuine and they were pretty accurate most of the time.
"I mean I just thought through what Miss was asking, I don't really know what I did" I answered honestly.
"Ah okay. Sorry! So rude of me not to introduce myself, I'm Haley" she smiled widely and stuck her hand out.
"I'm Faith" I said as I shook her hand.
"Are you the girl Ryder has been telling everyone about? Faith! Yes that's it! I always just knew you as the smart girl that sat near the back of the class. It's not until Ryder mentioned you that I was like wait, who is Faith? And I thought he was talking about you, but then I thought what if he was talking about someone else but then I came up to you just to make sure it was really you he was talking about" and as Haley rambled at quite a fast pace it was only until a few seconds of silence had passed after she had finished talking did I process what she said.
For a second I was stunned but I tried to hide it by continuing to walk slowly when I really just wanted to stop the girl and shake her until all these secrets spilled from her to answer my questions.
My overthinking spurred into action. There were so many parts of this dialogue I NEEDED to dissect. Are you Faith the girl Ryder has been telling everyone about?
Ryder had been telling everyone about me? ME? And who was everyone? And what was he saying?!
But you know, I played it cool to get my answers. "Ryder has been telling everyone about me?" I asked so calmly but my insides were all warm and fuzzy and I was sure with the amount of stammering my heart was doing it would stop any minute.
