She looks in the mirror and lets her hair down to cover the bruises

Hoping today will be the day someone chooses to notice and care

She puts on a smile in a soft pink sort of way

Wanting to fade into the background and stand out at the same time

She walks slowly with the hope of simply disappearing

He silences his music and hears his mother's words

"You are worthless and I'm ashamed to call you mine"

His music is back on to drown out the numbing pain

But what he heard in the silence is deafeningly louder

It penetrates his mind as he grabs his trophy and gives the team speech

She washes her tear stained cheeks first thing each morning

Hoping no one will know she's cried herself to sleep for months

She had been driving the car when it happened

"Why him? Why not me?! WHY?" is all she ever thinks anymore

Yet she puts the dark red smile on her face and the school colors adorn her

He takes care of his mother every morning before walking out the door

Most mornings he's late because she needs his complete attention

He gives her the medicine and waits until hospice arrives

Hoping today won't be the day he gets the call he's been dreading for years

His every word is humor because if it were not, he just might break down

We all have backgrounds others may not know of

Some have been hurt and some have hurt others

Many have lost those we love or been given responsibility beyond our years

Few have never heard discouraging words that rip the flesh like a knife

Never assume you know someone's story because they just might surprise you
