"Once upon a time, there was a young woman living in a big, big castle..."
"No, that doesn't sound right. Scrap that. Have you got any other ideas?"
"Umm... Once upon a time, there was a... poor family living in an old... log cabin in the woods..."
"That doesn't sound good at all. I... don't even think we are doing this right at all. We need something unique, beautiful and convincing. We have to make them fall in love with our story. We have to write the most beautiful and the most heartwarming story they've ever heard; and before we even start writing it, we have to make sure we have a brief idea of what the whole story is going to be about."
"So... we can choose one word to describe our story, right?"
"Yes. What do you think people like the most?"
"I don't know... Fame, success, money, love, you know, stuff like that..."
"No, no, no, you don't understand what I mean. Let's take this another way. What do you think is the most innocent and the most beautiful and the most heartwarming thing that you know?"
"Umm... probably childhood, I guess. Is that good?"
"Yes, it is! Thank you, you gave me a great idea! Let's make the story!"
I know this may be too straightforward, but this has a meaning.
This... is a dialogue between two people that are planning to write a story for a local story writing contest. The main theme of their story has already been given by the judges: 'the most beautiful thing you've ever heard about'.
The idea that I want to share through this is the fact that they finally realize that fame or success or money don't mean anything, compared to youth, kindness, and innocence, the three main words that are capable of accurately describing "childhood".
Whether it brings you memories of your great-grandmother's old log cabin in the woods, or of that giant cherry tree behind your best friend's picket fence surrounding her house, or maybe of the hypnotizing smell of all the rainbow-coloured flowers in your mother's little garden, childhood is the most wonderful time of your life, the time when you gather the most beautiful memories, the time when you finally say hello to your new world, the time when you make your first steps in learning to be a great person.
And the most fascinating thing about it all is that it always means something completely different for everyone, it always brings different memories to everyone. Ask a few people about what their childhood meant to them and they'll all take you to hundreds of different worlds and stories, some of them happy, some of them having a bittersweet "ending", and some of them becoming life lessons for all of us.
But, whether that story was bad or not, it's always worth it. It's the time when you're allowed to make countless mistakes and learn new stuff from them.
We still don't know what the exact definition of "childhood" is. We still don't know what its purpose is, or why it exists. But there's one thing that I know, that you know, that each of us know: it's truly magical. No worries, no sadness, no corruption. No other thing in the entire world can give us that, and it's mindblowing.
They say, "Keep your soul as pure as it was when you were a child."
I've always seen it as a sort of overly contagious disease that scientists are still trying to find the cure for. It's this... corruption that's spreading constantly, slowly but surely, to everyone. This loss of innocence, this loss of purity, this loss of kindness, and this sudden egotism, this sudden narcissism, this sudden... cruelty that we start to throw towards each other.
It's hard to keep being as kind and pure as a child. But it's possible, and it's worth it.
Maybe if we all tried. Maybe if we all opened up our eyes. Maybe if we all became much kinder, much more tolerant and much less egotistical and cruel towards each other. We could change the world. It's hard, but it's possible.
Childhood...
It's a truly mystical and wonderful world. A world all the worries run away from, a world full of sunshine, flowers, toys, and millions of laughs and smiles. An unforgettable journey into the mysteries of this big, wide world, and beyond.
It's a flight to infinity.
