I snatch up the purse she bought me and run down the stairs as fast as I can. Before I get to the door, she's already there. Her hair's longer and has become even lighter. Her freckles are all over and she looks toned.
We crash into each other's arms and laugh as we lose our balance and fall on the floor. She smells like grass and sunshine if it had a scent.
"Dude I've missed you so much!" she exclaims.
"You know I don't like it when you call me that," I reply. I can't help but laugh though. We help each other up and head out the door.
"So are you excited?" I ask her as we get in the car.
"Um, heck yes! I haven't seen an actual movie all summer. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy reading but there's such thing as too much."
"But didn't you like reading my letters?" I say with a smile.
"Of course I did Alana! They were always the highlight of my day."
"I hope seeing me in person is better than that," I say and look away while blushing.
"Alana," she says softly. She reaches her hand out and touches my cheek turning my face towards her. She stares intently like she is trying to read my mind. I can't breathe.
"We're here girls!" her mom suddenly says startling us. She pulls her hand away and opens the car door. I quickly follow, trying to cool down my face. Miriam seems unfazed.
"Bye girls, have fun!"
"Bye mom!"
"Bye Mrs. Fields!"
We pay for our tickets and go to the snack bar.
"You want anything?" she asks without looking at me.
"No, I'm not hungry," I mumble. Truthfully I'm way too nervous to eat.
"Okay, we'll just go ahead in". I follow her into the dark room. She chooses two seats right in the middle. We sit in silence till the movie starts and fills our need for conversation. As the movie gets scarier I move closer to her. Eventually my hand finds hers in the dark. I'm breathless as I wait to see if she holds it. Slowly, her fingers close around mine and she guides my head to her shoulder. No longer I hear the movie. The sound of my heart beat pulses through my ears. Too fast it ends and we head outside to wait for her mom.
"So how'd you like it?" I ask her.
"It was really suspenseful and even scary at times, isn't that right chicken?" she teases me and goes to tickle me.
"Stoppppp!" I giggle while secretly wanting her to continue. She pulls me closer and ruffles my hair.
"Quit it! I spent 30 minutes on my hair, " I complain.
" Oh come on, you still look beautiful," she says then bites her lip.
"Thanks, you do too," I mumble blushing. She pulls me closer.
"I missed you so much," she murmurs in my hair.
"I missed you too..."
She tilts my chin up and looks in my eyes. Is this it? I think to myself. Is she going to kiss me?
She leans in closer and closer so slowly. She's hesitant. Scared of my reaction. In my mind, I'm begging her to kiss me, to cross that line but I can't voice my thoughts. All of a sudden, her phone rings interrupting the moment. I pull away and turn my face away. She looks mad, as she puts the phone up to her ear.
"Hi mom. Yes we're ready to go. Great. We're coming." She hangs up and motions toward the parking lot.
"Let's go."
