"Sam if you don't hurry we'll be late, again." Alex said from the bottom of the steps to Sam's house. Sam groaned as she finished brushing her hair. If you can even call it that. She doesn't even brush one side of her head.

"Okay, one second!" Samantha yells to Alex from her bathroom. She walks to her front door and sees Alex roll her eyes at her. "What?"

"Your hair looks terrible. I'll fix it on the bus. Come on." Alex walks away to their bus stop with Samantha barley keeping up. "Why are you so quiet today?"

"I only got two hours of sleep last night. My brain wouldn't shut up." Alex laughs and Sam offers a tired laugh in return. The actual reason she is tired is because her parents had another fight resulting in her dad hurting her mom. She tries to stop him, she really does. But if she tries he hurts her and her little brother, Benjy. He's only 8 and she needs to protect him, it's her job.

They made it to the bus and waited for about 2 minutes before it arrived. They sat in the front of the bus to avoid the popular kids that sit in the back. Alex looked at Sam and giggled at how crazy her hair is. "Give me your brush. I need to fix that hair before it starts to stay like that." Sam handed Alex the brush and turned around so she could brush her hair. "Did you see Shane pass the puck to get the winning goal last night. It was really hot."

"How is passing a rubber puck hot?" Sam asked as she rolled her eyes. Shane is Alex's boyfriend, who happens the be Sam's life time enemy. There is a reason behind it, it's definitely not meaningless hate. You see Sam is a closeted lesbian who has a huge crush on her best friend. What could go wrong?

"I don't know, he just is!" Alex blushed and continued to brush her friends hair. "We went to his house after the game and watched a movie together and cuddled, it was nice." She said. She didn't notice how uncomfortable Samantha was. Sam looked down at her hands and clenched her jaw.

"Can we stop talking about Shane, please?" Sam just wanted to talk to her best friend about something besides her boyfriend. Alex looked confused but nodded and tried to think about what else they could talk about.

"Do you want to go to a movie tonight?" Alex asked as she finished brushing Sam's hair. Sam nodded her head and turned around to face Alex. I wish it was a real date. Sam thought as she looked down at her lap. "Okay, you're acting really weird. Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yes, I'm fine. Can you stop asking that?" Sam looked out the window of the bus and watched the trees fly by. She took a deep breath and looked back at Alex who had a confused and shocked expression on her face.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you or strike a nerve or whatever I did." Alex grabbed Sam's hand and squeezed it lightly, trying to comfort her friend. Sam looked away from her lap and offered a small smile to her friend.

"I'm sorry for snapping at you. It's just that, everything at home isn't very great." Sam's eyes started to fill up with tears. "I need to tell you something tonight about my dad. Please don't freak out when I tell you. We can talk at the movies, okay?"

Alex nodded and hugged Sam. "Now I feel bad for upsetting you and making you cry." She patted Sam's back and stroked her hair with her other hand. "I'm sure that what ever is going on will get better, eventually." Sam smiled and pulled back from the hug.

"I don't think it will this time. But thanks for trying to cheer me up." The bus pulled to a stop and they walked to the doors of the bus. The doors opened and they stepped off with Alex still looking worried. They walked to their lockers after entering the school.

"I'll see you after class. We'll talk tonight, I promise." Sam walked off leaving a worried and concerned Alex at her own locker. What happened this time? I hope she's okay. I hope she isn't hurting herself again. Alex walked to her class and sat down.

Sam walked out of her class and saw Alex kissing Shane goodbye. God I really hate that guy. She thought as she walked to the bathroom. She started to tear up as she shut the stall door. She thought about her knife back home and thought about what she'd do with it if she had it right now. I'm stronger than this. I can fight the urge. Stop thinking about it Sam, stop thinking about it. She started to calm down but she noticed her cheeks were stained with tears.

She hated crying. She thought it meant that she was weak and couldn't take a little bit of pain. I'm not weak, I'm not weak. I can fight the tears, I know that I can. After a few more minutes of calming herself down she opened the stall and walked to the mirror. She dried her face and walked out of the bathroom.

Sam ran into someone. She went to apologize when she noticed that it was Shane. "Excuse me." She said and walked around him. He glared at her and walked into the bathroom. Why is he going into the girls bathroom? Samantha hid around the corner to see if he walked back out, but he didn't. After a minute or two she saw Alex walk into the bathroom after him with a huge smile on her face. Sam felt a pang in her chest at the sight. When she walked past the bathroom doors she heard lips smacking together and it made her sick to her stomach.

Sam ran out to the track and walked to the bleachers. She walked to the very top of the bleachers and sat down in the top left corner. She pulled out her phone and turned on her music. She listened to her 'get angry' playlist and kicked the seat in front of her. She hates Shane even more now, if that's possible. Really, in the girls bathroom. Why there? She sat against the back of the bleachers and closed her eyes. I wish she liked me like she likes Shane.

After a few minutes of sitting on the bleachers she opened her eyes and saw a male figure walking towards her. She looked closer and saw that is was Lucas, her lab partner and friend. He smiled when he saw her and walked up to the top of the bleachers to sit next to her. His smile dropped when he saw the tears streaming down her face. "What's wrong? Is this about Alex again?" He placed a hand on her shoulder and looked at her with sympathy. Yes, he does know about her crush.

"No, this is about something else." Sam lied. She might as well tell someone about her dad. "I need to tell you something. But you have to promise not to tell anyone if I tell you." Lucas nodded and Sam took a deep breath before continuing. How do I say this? "Something happened at my house. My dad got upset and he hurt my mom, when I tried to stop him he hurt me and Benjy. I'm too scared to go home."

Lucas hugged Sam and squeezed lightly. "I'm sorry Sam. That must be awful. If you ever need to get away I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind having you and your brother stay at our house. Your mom could come with." He smiled and wiped the tears off of Sam's face.

"Thank you so much Lucas. You're such a good friend. I have to go or I'll miss fifth period. You know how much Mr.Berg hates when people skip class and I don't need another detention." Sam laughed softly and stood up.

"I'll see you later Sam. Remember I'm always here if you need to talk." Lucas stood up and walked toward the school. Sam waited a few minutes before headed to Chemistry.

Maybe one day Alex will like me. Maybe one day I'll be worth something to someone. But for now I'll just act like nothing is wrong and I don't have a huge crush on my best friend.
