" Wow, I really did not know that you are THAT good now..." I looked at Jay as he threw the ball right into the basket in one try. "I honestly thought that you were still really bad like last time, oh remember when you threw the ball but hit yourself in the face by accident?" I could not help but laugh. Those were funny and carefree times, when we were still in school. Now we are both 22. However, Jay became an international superstar, while I'm still hiding out and sleeping in my parents' house. After we graduated, Jay went to pursue his dream of becoming a performer, and I still do not have any plans with my life yet besides eating and sleeping. Oh yeah, and hanging out with Jay.
Jay and I met on the first day of kindergarten, because we had to partner each other for everything. We were the tallest people in class hence were always paired up with each other. We grew closer and closer, eventually we decided to go to the same primary school. At that time, he only stayed two houses away. We were the bestest of friends. Till now we are very close although he had to move to the city all by himself, I never forgot him, neither did he forget me. His family still stayed two houses away and I usually went there to get really delicious cookies baked by his grandmother. She would always tell me, "My dear Alisabeth, will you marry my grandson one day? You are such a great girl..." I would usually shrug it off with a smile.
"Hey, Al let's go. I need to get back to the house and change." Jay suddenly interrupted my train of thoughts. "Why? Can't you just continue playing basketball with this shirt? Ahhhhh!" He had taken off his sweaty shirt and thrown it at me.
"JAY! WEAR YOUR SHIRT! EW!" I screamed and used my hands to cover my eyes. Thank goodness this place was so secluded and people did not see or hear us. "I'm wearing a undershirt Al, calm down..." He laughed at me. I could not help but stare at his beautiful eye smile and perfect teeth that were sparkling in the sunlight. I slapped myself internally. What was I thinking? " Hey Al, let me have my shirt...wait, are you...sniffing it?" Jay stared at me like I like was some crazy stalker. I blushed and quickly threw him his shirt. "Was not!" I mumbled.
Thankfully, the walk home was not so awkward. Since when did his skin look so soft and rosy? Argh! What is going on with me? Why am I like this?
When we finally reached his house, he asked, "Al, do you remember where the keys are? Hey, Al? Al?" He waved his hand in front of me and I quickly snapped out of staring at his face. "Oh, it's under the carpet. Remember?" I bent down and reached under the carpet, trying to find the key. "Alisabeth, what has gotten into you? You keep drifting off and doing weird things like sniffing my sweaty shirt and stuff. Are you all right?" I heard Jay ask me. "Nah, I'm totally fine, just...a bit tired, that's all." I unlocked the door and walked inside the house.
"Grandma! I'm home!" Jay shouted. Soon after, his old and frail-looking grandmother walked down the stairs and held onto the railings firmly. We immediately ran forward and assisted her. "Hello Auntie May! How are you feeling today?" I asked with a bright smile on my face. Jay walked over to the fridge to grab some cold water. "You two should get married soon. Really, the two of you suit each other perfectly." Auntie May sighed. I stared at Jay for a moment, then I felt my cheeks turn a bit red. A small thought ran through my mind, "What if Jay likes me and wants me marry me?" I pinched myself and yelped softly. I thought, "What are you doing Alisabeth? Wake up! You never feel affected when Auntie May tells you this!"
"Hey Grandma, that's never going to happen! Al and I are just best friends!" Jay said while handing me a cup of water. Although I was not sure why, I suddenly felt my heart drop. The next thing that he said made it worse. " Besides, I already have a girlfriend..."
I spat out the water in my mouth. "Al are you ok?" He asked me with concern. I nodded my head and ran to the toilet. I cleaned my mouth and clothes and looked into the mirror. Tears were welling up in my eyes. I quickly blinked them back. Why was I going to cry anyways? He was just my best friend and nothing else, right? Wrong. I had fallen for him. I had fallen for my best friend, Jung Jae Hyun. I heard whispers coming from behind the door. "Grandma, what happened to her? Is she ok?" I quickly opened the toilet door to find Jay about to knock it. "Hey Al, are you ok? Did you cry?! Your eyes are very red!" I told him that it was just water I used to wash my face that got into my eyes.
