I look at the car before me. Sick in my stomach and sweaty palms but all of this is normal for the car ride to school. We drive through the winding dark road and I watch the houses as we pass by. Its unusually cloudy today so there might be a chance of rain. The citizens were deprived of the luxury of news stations and weather forecasts. I was there when it happened.
Far ahead is a building, it might look like a regular High School but looks can be misleading. As it comes to view I look at my parents, it could be the last time I ever see them. You might think i'm being dramatic but in this place we are ruled by an unknown figure they call Mr. Faceless. Its the dumbest name i've ever heard but it suits it.
The moment I was dreading finally came. We arrive at the dropping off station where I show my student ID to let my parents pass through. My parents stopped the car by the entrance of hell aka school. "Look, Avis if you get chosen I want you to go with them and make us proud." My mom said. I wasn't like my parents they were an his side and I wasn't.
"Ok," I lie. It slips off my tongue easily due to the fact that I do this everyday.
"Have a good day at school," my dad says. Without another word I step out of the car and walk through hells gate and go straight to auditorium for the Choosing.
I walk through the gates and look around. Everyone else is just like my parents, happy. Its like they are controlled.
"Miss, I am going to need to see your identification as proof you go here," a Officer says. This is all security. Everything every where is in a way secure and controlled. "Sure." I take out my ID from my pocket and hand it to him. "Carry on." I do as I'm told and walk toward the auditorium where they gather the students every morning. Everybody is happy and enjoying themselves. I go to the back go the bleachers and sit alone. I lost all my friends just because of the government. They are the main cause of all my issues. I walk by them in the halls and they look at me with dirty stares. The auditorium starts to fill up and once all the students are present they dim the lights.
This is the terrifying part. This when they pick out the kids and send them else where. It just random and they seem happy to get taken. The talking dies down and and the screen in the middle turns on and the music starts playing.
"Students will you please stand up" I stand and start to recite the motto.
"We will do our best for the government, the people and Mr. Faceless. The government will always overrule family and friends. I will dedicate for the good. And I will dedicate to the government." The auditorium booms. We sit down and the screens turns on a we wait to which of us is chosen. A few barely come back.
"Holly, Avis, Elizabeth, Oliver, Joe, and Levi."
They called me. Out of all days they pick this one. The One year anniversary of the Choosing. Wow. I walk down and meet the rest of the crowd. My palms are sweaty and I can't breathe. All eyes are on me, not on them, but me. I stand out because everyone else has their natural hair but not me, my hair is blue. I stick out like a sore thumb. " These four are the Chosen ones and will be with our government until they are no longer valuable. We shall send them off to their duty and wish them well." A roar of applauds went off as this ended and we were walking towards the exit.
I would be leaving my parents and an education for the government. I roll my eyes at that dumb thought. The government wouldn't want us to leave our education and become dumb. Or would they?
I meet the group and we walk outside to a black car taking. This is a terrible feeling, I'm never going to see my family again. Hear them and hug them.I didn't even tell them I loved them after I left the car. I thought I was coming back. I opened the door to enter the car and there I see Mr. Faceless sitting and playing with the hem of his blazer. "I have chosen you six." There was a silence. We all just looked down. The car starts and we are off to where ever they are taking us. I am the first one to raise my head. Those were the one chosen.
I study Mr. Faceless for a bit. There are no distinct features that show. All of the skin is covered. He's mysterious." Can the car go any faster. We are on a tight schedule and we are almost running out of time," he yelled at the driver. There was a weird tone to his voice now that I heard it in person. The driver speed up without hesitation. I keep looking around, I can't help it I'm curios. There are no windows, how did I not notice this.
I wonder why there is no windows, they probably don't want us to look where we're heading.
