Jack’s P.O.V

I pressed my fingers faintly against the memory box and let it show me Pitch’s past. My view of Merida’s room faded away while a new backdrop appeared. It was just pure darkness at first. I looked into the vast nothingness expecting an image of Pitch to appear but it didn’t. It wasn’t until a gentle voice called out did the backdrop change. “Daddy?” A quiet voice called as stars began to shine through the darkness. A sky configured above me and the moon was the brightest light source. A forest grew up from the fog covered ground which made the area feel even more ominous. “Daddy?” The voice called again. Suddenly a small girl walked out of the forest and stood alone. Her eyes were red with tears and her cheeks soaked from crying. “Daddy? Where are you Daddy? I’m scared.” She cried. This little girl had black hair and a straight nose. Her eyes nearly resembled a cat’s with the strange golden color that tinted them. “She looks just like Pitch.” I thought to myself. I assumed that this girl had some sort of a relation to Pitch, perhaps his daughter? The girl cried out for her father but no one came. I felt sorry for her she seemed so afraid and there was nothing I could do after all this was just a memory. Suddenly the backdrop quickly changed to a dark and portentous cave. “No leave my daughter alone!” A voice demanded. Deeper within the cave there was Pitch with his daughter asleep in his arms. She looked pained as she groaned and cried through a fitful sleep. “I know exactly what you are trying to do! Leave her be! She will not become one of your fearlings!” Pitch shouted. At first it seemed that he was yelling at nothing but as I looked closer I could see a dark shadow that painted the floor, the walls, and the ceiling. It didn’t resemble one of Pitch’s nightmares in fact it looked ten times more terrifying. It had no face or any human like features. It was a shadow and nothing else, just a dark figure that seemed transparent. “Kozmotis Pitchiner your daughter is already ours.” The shadow stated. “No! Please leave her be! She is just a child!” Pitch begged. The shadow danced in all of the open spaces until it enveloped Pitch and his daughter. “That she is, and you are an adult yet you fear me.” The shadow mocked. “I fear for my daughter! Now I demand you to release her!” Pitch shouted. “What is in it for me?” The shadow asked. Pitch searched himself for an offer but only one came to mind. “Take me instead.” Pitch offered. The shadow seemed to pause and consider the transaction. “Your fear for your daughter’s life is greater than your own. I will make the deal.” The shadow stated. Pitch sighed in relief as the shadow enveloped his daughter and removed the nightmares. Pitch stared at his young daughter lovingly as her eyes opened. “Daddy?” She inquired. “Yes sweet heart I’m here.” Pitch cooed as he hugged his daughter. “Where are we Daddy?” She asked once Pitch pulled out of the hug and set her down to stand on her own. “We are in the forest honey; you know the path that leads home right?” Pitch asked his daughter. The girl nodded yes to answer her father’s question. “Good, I knew you would. I want you to take the path and go straight home, okay?” Pitch instructed. “Okay Daddy.” She stated. “Can I have a kiss darling?” Pitch asked as he knelt down to her level and turned his cheek to her. “Of course Daddy!” The girl exclaimed as she jumped on him and kissed him lightly on the cheek. “Now go head on home to Mother okay?” Pitch stated as he assured her out of the cave and into the forest. “Okay! Bye Daddy I love you!” Pitch’s daughter exclaimed as she ran into the forest. “I love you so very much.” Pitch whispered under his breath as he walked back to the cave. “It is time.” The shadow stated. “I know.” Pitch sighed. The shadow began to envelop Pitch, it swirled like a tornado until it managed to completely surround him. “Take me.” Pitch declared. The shadow quickly obliged and dived towards him. It crashed into his chest and disappeared. Pitch shouted out in pain as he fell to his knees. He held his head in his hands and cried out. “No! Please! My daughter! She can’t be dead!” He cried. “The shadow must be filling his head with nightmares.” I thought to myself. I watched in horror as the shadow tore Pitch’s whole being into something nefarious. Once Pitch had stopped crying out he rose to his feet. Before the shadow had entered him, he resembled a normal human. He had the same body figure but without his grayish skin tone and menacing aura. But now that the shadow had over taken him he looked just as he was when I first met him. His golden eyes held a wicked glare, while his skin tone turned to a grayish black tone. This was the Pitch Black that I knew. Pitch turned his head shoulder to shoulder in attempt to crack his neck as he stepped out of the cave and in to the moonlight. “Look what you’ve now released into a world of innocence!” Pitch shouted as he pointed towards the Moon. “Now this world will be mine and it will be nothing but darkness!” He cackled as he disappeared into the shadows. Unexpectantly the memory closed out and I was back in Merida’s room. When I returned from the memory I found Merida slashing a sword against the wooden pegs on her bed, while Hiccup was engaged in a book. I turned to my left to see Rapunzel staring at me worryingly. “What did you see?” She asked. “How was it?” Merida questioned as she discontinued swinging her sword. “See anything helpful?” Hiccup asked as he closed his book. I took a moment to collect myself before answering them. “Let’s just say I didn’t expect to see what I saw.” I chuckled. Rapunzel sat by me and placed her hand on my shoulder. “Take your time.” She stated. “No we need this information now!” Merida exclaimed as she jumped off of her bed and landed beside Hiccup. “I think I’ve found out how we can defeat Pitch.” I stated in disbelief. “What?!” Rapunzel, Merida, and Hiccup all shouted in unison. “How?” Hiccup questioned. “Wait, first tell us about the memory.” Rapunzel stated. “It wasn’t as vivid or self-explanatory as mine memory but it was enough to see what happened to Pitch in the past. In turns out he had a daughter, and what’s even stranger is that he loved her more than I’ve ever seen a Father could.” I started. “What do you mean, ‘more than a Father ever could’?” Merida questioned. I leaned on Rapunzel and set the memory box on the floor beside me. “There was this shadow-“ I started but Hiccup cut me off. “Like a fearling, or a nightmare?” He asked. “No it had no features beside darkness, it didn’t manifest into anything beside a shadow.” I answered. “Ok so what happened?” Rapunzel asked. “His daughter was plagued with horrible nightmares, and from what I could see it looked like she was going to turn into a fearling because of the shadow.” I explained. “Wait so the shadow was causing the girl’s nightmares?” Merida inquired. I nodded my head yes before continuing. “So I’m assuming this shadow was the cause of nightmares in fearlings before Pitch.” I stated. “Because this memory was before he was Pitch Black right?” Hiccup inquired. “Who was he before he was Pitch Black?” Merida questioned. “The shadow called him Kozmotis Pitchiner in the memory, that’s who he must have been before he was Pitch Black.” I answered. “And I thought my name was lame. Hiccup chuckled. I rolled my eyes at his random remark and continued. “So Pitch brought his daughter to the shadow’s lair and demanded that he remove his awful nightmares from his daughter, but the shadow refused. Pitch offered himself in exchange for his daughter to not turn into a fearling. Of course the shadow obliged to the offer, so he freed Pitch’s daughter and took him instead.” I explained. “So Pitch is just a fearling then?” Merida inquired. “No, a fearling is made from free. After the nightmares left Pitch’s daughter the shadow jumped into Pitch and took him over.” I explained. “Almost like what happened to you when Pitch took over you?” Rapunzel asked. “Yes! Exactly! But there was something Pitch said as he was being taken over by the shadow.” I pondered. “What did he say?” Hiccup demanded. “He was shouting and crying out. He shouted “No! Please! My daughter! She can’t be dead!” While he changed into Pitch Black.” I explained. “When you were being taken over by Pitch’s nightmares you shouted similar things like that.” Rapunzel stated. “I did?” I inquired. “Yep it must have been because of the nightmares you were having while you were being taken over.” Merida confirmed. “Wait that makes sense! The shadow uses your worst fears to get stronger right? So by using your fears against you it gets enough strength to take you over. That’s what the shadow did to both you and Pitch! He gave Pitch a nightmare of his daughter dying, that’s how he took him over!” Hiccup connected.  “So how does this help us beat Pitch?” Merida asked.  “Just like Jack’s nightmares, they broke Pitch’s heart. He became vulnerable to the shadow once it did. All we have to do is have Rapunzel heal him!” Hiccup exclaimed. Rapunzel cringed slightly as Hiccup formulated this plan. I put my arm around her and looked at her reassuringly. “I have to what?” She questioned. “You’re going to have to Rapunzel; it’s the only way to save Pitch.” I stated. “Save? Don’t you mean stop?” Merida corrected. “No, Pitch wasn’t reborn like I was. He’s a mortal trapped by his own nightmares and fears. If Rapunzel heals him, he’ll be freed from the shadow.” I explained. “But what happens if the shadow is only expelled from Pitch not destroy after she does heal him?” Merida questioned. “It won’t survive Rapunzel’s magic.” I answered. “How can you know that?” Rapunzel asked. I removed my arm from Rapunzel and stood up; I then wandered to the window before answering. “In the memory the shadow had some sort of relation to M.I.M. He called out threats to the Moon, and said that he would fill this world with his darkness. “I explained. “So?” Merida inquired. “So, M.I.M brought us together for a reason! He knew we’d come across Pitch’s nightmares! He knew that we would be able to stop this shadow and save Pitch and everyone else!” I exclaimed. “How can you trust this Moon guy so much? How do you know that he knows this will work?” Merida asked. I opened the window harshly and pointed towards the now rising moon. “Because he brought me back! He gave me this new life! He is powerful and wants this world to remain innocent. He made me a Guardian and this is the mission he has set out for me….for all of us!” I explained.  I flew across the room and landed in front of Rapunzel. “Are you guys having doubts?” I asked. Merida seemed uneasy about this whole thing, while Rapunzel looked downright terrified. Hiccup remained stoic as if he was soaking in the whole thing, while I felt like we’ve literally hit the jackpot. “Don’t you guys see? We can finally end all of the fear! But I can’t do it without you.” I stated as I grabbed Rapunzel’s hand and brought to my chest. She blushed slightly before stepping forward to hug me. “I’m with you Jack; I’ll do this as long as you’re with me.” She swore. I grinned widely and kissed her lightly on her forehead. “I’m in too, but only if I get a few shots at Pitch before we rid him of that shadow thing.” Merida laughed. “Hiccup?” I inquired. “Oh I’ve been in this since the beginning, I mean why would I miss out on an adventure like this?” Hiccup joked. “That’s it then, we are in this together, till the end.” I stated as I outstretched my arm to the three of them. Merida put her hand on top of mine, while Hiccup put his on top of hers, and Rapunzel placed hers on top of his.  “Till the end.” We all said in unison.
