I'm out of breath. I'm running as if my life depended on it, which it did. I looked to my right and saw my best friend Ashley running as fast as I was. I guess being on the track team really helped. We rounded the corner and bumped into one of the gunmen...
EARLIER THAT MORNING:
"Rebecca, can you tell me the answer to the writing prompt?"
"My name is Becca." I muttered under my breath, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I turned to look at my best friend Ashley, who was playing with her silky, long black hair. She mouthed the answer, "How am I supposed to know?" to me. My face turned as bright as a tomato as i admitted i didn't know. I got up and excused myself, and ran out of the room.Less than a minute later, Ashely was at my side in the bathroom, wiping the stream of waterfalls that fell from my bright blue eyes. "It's okay Bec! Everybody knows your a genius." Ashley said, trying to calm down her friend.
"It's not that stupid question! Becca sobbed, "My parents are getting a divorce and I can't deal with anything without bursting into tears!" Ashley was about to say something when suddenly, the announcement bell rang. This was unusual due to the fact that there was only ever two announcements during the day; the morning ones and the afternoon ones. Suddenly a frightened, yet deep voice spoke out.
"Attention teachers! This is NOT a drill! We are in Lockdown mode! Repeat Lockd..." That's when we heard the gun go off.
"WAS THAT A GUN!" Screamed Ashley, who now had makeup smeared down her cheeks from crying. I firmly grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her, telling her to pull it together.
"Ash we have to get to a safe room with a lock on it. Which means we have to bolt, like now!" I said as I took of sprinting. Ashley was hot on my tail. We helplessly ran around the corner hoping to catch a classroom before the door closed, but we were too late. My knees started shaking and eventually I fell to the ground begging for Mrs. Mansion to open the door, but I knew that there was no chance.
"Bec we have to go find somewhere safe. How about the Library!" Ashley said, speaking a mile a minute. I noticed that her long black hair was now into two french braids, and her normally golden eyes were now bloodshot.
I reluctantly got up and we cautiously walked the long hallway to the LRC. Suddenly, we heard the cocking of a gun. I whipped my head around in time to see a bullet fly past me.
"RUN!" I screamed, my throat turning raw from the tears. We took of sprinting as fast as we could as another bullet whizzed past Ashley's face. We rounded the corner and bumped into another one for the gunman. Being the fast thinker I was, I kicked the gunman square in the chest and we turned around and ran. We finally reached the LRC and hid on the second floor behind the book shelfs.
All I could hear was the rush of blood that was going to my head, and my heart beating so loud, I wondered if Ashley could hear it. Ashley turned to look at me and then she winced.
"Bec omg! You were shot!" Her whisper barely audible. It was true, there was a gaping wound in my shoulder, and blood was covering my sweatshirt. My bright blue eyes went wide with shock, and the floor rushed up to meet me very fast.
