I let the automatic doors slide open in front of me and I stepped through them into the huge reception area. I had an interview for my first proper job and I was beginning to get nervous. A young woman with a kind face sat at the desk typing details into the huge computer which sat in front of her.
“Hello, how may I help you?” She asked looking up from the computer and smiling broadly at me.
“My names Elle Ball, I have and interview with Mr Archer at 4:30pm” I told her politely, returning her beaming smile.
“Oh yes, I believe your college sent some work here and suggested you to us, I’ve looked through it myself and it’s outstanding. Take a seat over there and I’ll call you when Mr Archer is ready for you.” Her smile lit up the whole room and it was just the welcome I needed to boost my confidence for the interview. I quickly thanked her and took a seat in the area she had pointed to. I couldn’t believe that the college had thought I was good enough to send my work off before they even met me. Smiling to myself I looked through the papers I had clutched in my hands, making I sure I had everything I was going to need.
The minutes ticked by slowly while I waited and waited for my name to be called amongst the many other interviewees. I couldn’t help but tap my fingers to the familiar tune of wildheart. That song had been hammered into me, I couldn’t get away from it if I tried, not that I wanted to. The boys were constantly practicing at home and every time I turned on the radio it seemed to be playing. One by one, adults and teenagers alike traipsed out of the office, most of them with glum expressions on their faces, however, a few looked as though they had just been given everything they’d ever wanted. A guy in his mid 20s – 30s walked confidently down the corridor, the familiar face brought a smile to my face and I jumped up and walked swiftly towards him. He hadn’t yet noticed me but I stopped directly in front of him, forcing him to look up at the person who was blocking his path.
“Elle!” He exclaimed. “What are you doing here?” His voice comforted me; it was as though he’d bought a piece of home with him.
“I could ask you the same thing?” I laughed, delighted to see someone who had such a massive part in helping me complete my work for college in the first place. “I have a job interview, the college sent my work here and they wanted to see me, I might actually be able to quit my job at all these stupid coffee shops.”
“Hey, coffee is awesome! Ah, I remember, my boss mentioned it not too long ago. I’m working with the McFly boys in a few weeks when they come over here but I needed to get things set up before hand.” He explained, grinning widely at me.
“How are the boys, and Sara of course?” I asked.
“I knew this was going to come up,” he groaned, his smile faded slightly and he looked away.
“That bad?” I asked, not really sure if I wanted to hear the answer.
“Well, Connor’s a mess, he misses you both way too much and I think he enjoyed having Elyar around. Brad is coping; he doesn’t like to show how he’s feeling so it can be quite difficult sometimes. James is keeping us all sane and I think Sara’s just missing being around girls.” He sighed, things sounded as though they were pretty bad but I couldn’t help but notice that he’s failed to mention one person.
“What about Tristan?” I asked him.
“Tristan’s mood swings are giving us all whiplash if I’m honest. He can literally go from being the hyperactive teenager I used to know to sobbing quietly in the bathroom within 5 minutes, he honestly needs you Elle,” Dean looked down nervously whilst running his hand though his hair.
“I’ll call him later.” I muttered, returning Deans sad expression. I heard my name being called by the receptionist and looked over to where she was calling me from. “See you around Dean, tell the boys I said hi” I told him before walking off into the office I had been called into too.
The room was filled with stunning photographs of different landscapes, I couldn’t help but wonder the story behind the photograph and if they had any kind of meaning at all. In my mind I started creating scenarios for each different picture, a young family on a beach holiday in France or a newly wedded couple on their honeymoon in Turkey. My thoughts were soon interrupted by a small man sat behind a large desk clearing his throat.
“Take a seat Elle,” he told me, looking me up and down and nodding slowly. It made me feel a little uncomfortable to have someone stare at me like that.
“Thank you,” I smiled sitting in the soft chair opposite him. He returned the smile before looking down at the papers which had been placed in front of him.
“We’ve seen your work and we were very impressed especially as it has been done by someone with such little experience. You have a promising future and we would like to help you along the way. I noticed that you know Dean Sherwood?” He asked, the way he was staring at me made me feel as though he was burning a hole in my face.
“My brother’s in a band, they work together so I suppose I know him quite well, he’s helped me with photography and taught me quite a lot actually.” I told him, I didn’t really understand why this was important but for some reason it seemed to be very intriguing to Mr Archer.
“I see, I see.” He mumbled whilst writing something down on the little pad in front of him. “I’m sure you’ve already noticed that this isn’t like a normal interview. In fact, we’ve already decided to give you a job considering Mr Sherwood has spoken so highly of you. But I have something else to offer you to earn some extra money, it won’t take up much of your time, I promise.” It was strange to hear someone talking about Dean in such a formal manner but I suppose that’s what it was like in the business world. I had no idea what he wanted to offer me but I was thrilled that I’d already gotten the job so easily, I would have to thank Dean later.
“What is it?” I asked, referring to this other job he had just mentioned.
“Well, if you would like, you could enter as a model, you have the looks and you are the exact height we’re looking for. You’ll get quite a lot of money from it and you’ll only be asked to come occasionally for a few hours. What do you think?” He asked, a beaming smile spreading across his face.
“There’s got to be some sort of catch?” I asked in a disbelieving tone.
“Well, of course you’ll have to lose a bit of weight but I’m sure that won’t be a problem.” He was still grinning expecting me to just take the job and go.
“Excuse me?” I could hurt the hurt in my voice in my voice even though I didn’t feel hurt in any way.
“This is America sweetheart.” He flung his arms up in the air as if to say that this room represented the whole of America. “More importantly, this is California. To make it in the modelling business you can’t just look like everyone else, you need to be prettier, skinnier, and different. You have the looks but your weight is average if you want the job that’s something you need to change.” He looked at me as though I was stupid and what he was saying was completely obvious.
“Do I have time to think about it?” I asked, what he’d asked was appalling but it would also give me the money I needed to get a house of my own once I moved out later in life, it would give me a head start so trying to find a job won’t be so stressful if I know I have a little more time.
“You have 24 hours. I’m expecting a call by tomorrow at 8pm, no later.” He told me sternly. “It was nice to meet you Elle and I really hope you do decide to take the job.”
“Thank you” I said timidly, I was unsure how to feel about this interview but obviously I had a lot of thinking to do.
