The Next Morning
I woke up in my bed with the sun glaring through my window. I roll over with my back to the window and stare at my suitcase and the mess of clothes around it. A picture of Rebecca instantly pops into my mind and that was my cue to get up.
I go to my bathroom to brush my teeth and see how many pimples formed on my face throughout the night. Until I hear, "Adeline! Breakfast!"
I walk downstairs and the aroma of bacon and pancakes filled the house as if I was in a Waffle House. I see my family sitting down with smiles on their faces. As I got closer, Richard was the first to see me, "good morning, how'd you sleep?"
"Good, how did you guys?"
Tiffany turned herself around to face me, "we slept good. Come sit! You hungry?"
I nodded and sat down next to her and Richard handed me a plate. "Thank you," I smiled and picked up a few pieces of bacon and two pancakes.
Mich asked with food in his mouth, "mom, can Harry come over tonight for dinner?"
"No," I can see her out of the corner of my eye looking at me then to him. I was the reason.
"Oh, come on! We'll be downstairs anyways playing video games."
Tiffany looked at her husband then to me, "would you mind if one of your brother's friends came over?
"I don't mind," I shrugged, not knowing what the big deal was.
My dad chimes in, "why do you still hang out with that Harry boy anyway?"
Mich furrowed his eyebrows, "what's wrong with him?"
"I just don't think he's a kid you should be hanging out with. Wasn't he on probation last year?"
"Now Richard," Tiff chimes in, "we said that Mich can hang out with whoever he wants as long as isn't be escorted home by the police or his grades drop."
He nods, going back to reading the newspaper and clearing his throat, "since he's coming over, he can meet your sister." He looks at me and raises his eyebrows with questioning eyes. I half-smiled and shrugged once again. I don't understand why they were treating me like I am a fragile piece of a shell.
"Um, sure," Mich awkwardly says and chomps down on some more bacon, "so, it's cool that he comes over in an hour?"
"Woah, woah, woah!"
"Wait, you said at dinner time," Tiffany exclaimed, confused as hell.
"I did, but we want to go get new games and shop and stuff."
Mom and Dad seemed to not have a reason to say no so Richard didn't even bother and said, "whatever."
"Sweet. Thanks, guys."
"You need money?" Tiffany asks.
"Just like $200."
I almost spit out my water when he said $200. I didn't know that moms would just hand their kids two one hundred dollar bills for clothes.
She rolls her eyes and gets up to grab her wallet and Michael follows right behind her. It was just me and my dad at the table.
"So, um, how are you liking the house?" He asked me and folded his hands together on the table.
"It's beautiful and...big," I looked around the house and we both laugh.
"I know it's awkward now, but we don't want to rush into things and go shopping. I can tell you're shy and we are too. I mean, you flew across the country to live with people you don't even know. You woke up this morning in a unfamiliar room and- Anyway, we promise to provide you a good home and anything you need."
