Yeon Joo stared at herself in the mirror, it was hard to believe she was eighteen. It had been two years since she'd been officially registered as a state gisaeng. Before then, Seon dook had ensured that Yeon Joo knew everything there was to know about being a gisaeng. As it were, no man had ever taken Yeon Joo to bed, she wasn't particularly bothered because there was more to being a gisaeng than just pleasing a man. Gisaengs were also entertainers and thanks to Seon dook, there wasn't a single musical instrument that Yeon Joo couldn't play. She knew so many poems and songs that she once feared that there wasn't any space in her head to learn more.
But she did learn more, a whole lot more. Ever since the strange incident in the forest nearly eight years ago, Yeon Joo vowed never to be vulnerable ever again.
She had met a few ghosts who were martial arts masters and she had pestered them until they taught her everything they knew. She sighed as she dressed up for the evening.
If it wasn't for her foster mother, she wouldn't have nice hanboks to wear. Chae won had always adored Yeon Joo and constantly doted on her. She'd bought a very expensive hanbok specifically for Yeon joo's eighteenth birthday. Yeon Joo loved the yellow top and the red skirt, decorated with golden patterns, the silk was so smooth and the dress so fine that Yeon Joo was sure that the dress was meant for royalty. It was too bad she wouldn't get to go out this evening.
Grandmother gave a strict warning to avoid the full moon on her eighteenth birthday, Yeon Joo pleaded with the old woman to tell her why but her grandmother simply repeated the warning.
“Avoid the full moon on your eighteenth birthday even if it means staying inside all night!"
