The Wrong Mind-Short Story

It all started when the new era was fast approaching with the United States of America trying to fit to the current year of 2117. The ideals of past generations pushed the nation into change that would weed out criminals forever. The first push of this new system was set up in one of the biggest cities of America called, nuovo inizio, coming from an Italian term meaning new beginning. The city being newly designed to fit a futuristic theme as the nation around them was rotting from numerous accounts of crimes. Fires were one of the biggest assaults to the country that would tear apart a community and a nation. Meaning that nuovo inizio was completely fire retardant, keeping the possibility that the U.S could once again come together after this trail.

"Ben, you have to hurry and eat," said Ava

"I know sis," replied Ben, "just promise you will be back tonight."

"I would never leave you benny boo," Ava answered half heartedly, "you and I will always be together."

Three years ago Ben and Ava use to live in a run down home surrounding by the failure of a nation all around them. One weekend their parents drove them to a camp site where many other children were staying for the weekend. It was so kids could air out their lungs from the toxic smoke that filled their bodies and left them gasping for air. Ava's parents dropped them off and left their goodbyes to their children. That was the last time Ben and Ava ever saw their parents. When their parents drove home they did not know that their home was the next target for a flame that would wipe out happiness from two kids. The home ignited into flames during the night that left an unfortunate loss of two loving parents. Forever leaving Ben and Ava with a hole in their heart and the fear of losing one another like they lost their parents..Through the circumstances Ava took control without blinking an eye. It helped her mature and get ready for the test that could change her life.

Ava and Ben walked along the newly built sidewalks constructed of metal. The stillness of the air brought every hair on the back of their neck to stand. They were moved into the new city only a year before and the quietness around, haunted them everyday. All that could be heard was the speaker in the sky calmly saying,"The first annual testing will now occur today. This is the start of a bigger and brighter future for all of us. One filled without crime and hatred. Keep your head straight for if you have the mind then you have the intentions. Good luck to all, Sincerely, your nation." The nation had set up a new system to clear out all possible evil that could arise in the new controlled dystopia. Although among this new little world were no adults except the officials that kept everyone in line. It was to ensure that this was an untouched society full of potential for a greater future.

As Ava glanced around there was a mass of kids walking with a bleak attitude to the Nuovo Inizio All School leaving a dreary atmosphere. No one knew exactly what the test was, but they had been told that if you fail then you are to be executed to ensure safety for all. Some kids were to never walk back out of that school and none felt strong enough to accept that fate. Everyone slugged their way into the building while being pat down by security. Ava walked herself and Ben into the massive structure of a school past the kid who was caught with a knife. They split up and went to their assigned levels and sections in the school. Ava walked slowly in the hallway until she reached the lecture room where she had been directed to earlier. One of the testing sessions was to be held there and as she walked into the room that can hold up to 500 people she noticed that there was almost no place to sit. The only place was in the front of the room next to this kid she had only talked to once before. Ava trudged over to the open seat and placed herself in it to await instructions.

The teacher had been patiently waiting for everyone to file in and obtain a seat. As soon as every spot had been taken the doors automatically shut to ensure that no one would try to escape during the process. The teacher picked up a piece of paper and started reading it word to word as if he had recited it a thousand times. It said,"When the nation crumbled and we were on edge a scientist came forward. He invented a high tech piece of equipment to measure the insanity that any of you could bring to our new city. It broadcasts a transmission into your brain that will allow you to use the fossilized virtual reality that has been majorly upgraded. When it is time you will close your eyes and allow your mind to relax. Then you will be entered into the testing session. Follow your instincts and do not subside from that." Everyone in the room seemed to stop breathing in order to digest the information that was given out. Then the instructor spoke up again except this time he wasn't looking at the paper. It seemed like he was look deeply at each one of us, but then at none of us at the same time. He spoke out,"Testing will now begin. Everyone close your eyes and follow the previous instructions.
