Tears flowed down her face, staining her shirt. He had been stabbed, the ambulance had been called but it was still far away. His precious life blood was flowing out from his body and, although she was putting pressure on the stab wound, it seemed he had lost too much blood.
He reached out a bloodied hand and wiped away her tears, although they were quickly replaced by more. She leaned into his hand, wanting to hold it but she had to put pressure on the wound.
"What can I do to make you smile?" He asked. If he was going to die, he wanted to see her smiling face before he did.
"Can you sing that song you like? About the sun." She couldn't think of the name at the moment, but he understood what she meant. One of the many many reasons why they fell for each other all those years ago. He nodded and put his hand in his pocket.
He drew in a deep breath and started to sing. As he did, memories of their times together flowed over them.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine"
Their first meeting at a bookstore, reaching for the last copy of the same book.
"you make me happy, when skies are grey"
Meeting again after their friends introduced them at a party they were both pressured into going.
"I hope you know that, I'll always love you"
And tonight, after seven long years of being together, she had proposed. He accepted.
"So please don't take my sunshine away"
His voice was weak and he couldn't sing on. A small smile fluttered onto his face as he whispered,
"Your tears have stopped."
"I think they've run out."
"Is that so."
"It is so." She leaned forward and kissed him.
As they parted, they whispered together,
"I love you."
Those were the last words they said together.
By the time the ambulance came, it was too late.
