Chapter Thirteen
"What's the contract for?" I asked in a harsh voice as soon as Christian walked in the door that evening.
"What?" He asked confused, pushing the door softly closed behind him.
"The contract, what's it actually for?"
"I thought that was obvious." He replied with a sigh. "It's to protect us and stuff when we get divorced and a way to stop the 'scandal' coming out about our wedding."
"I know that you idiot, I meant what's your purpose for it? You know the hidden one you're not telling me."
My hands were on my hips and my expression was stern, I was preparing myself for a fight if it came to that.
"What are you on about?" He replied plopping down on the couch.
"Why is it so beneficial to me? There are all these terms and clauses in it that you normally wouldn't put in, so why are they? I don't have much more options but to sign it, so why did you make it so agreeable?"
He shrugged. "We don't want to ruin you Serena; it's supposed to be a mutually beneficial agreement, why do you have such an issue with it? Isn't this a good thing?"
"It's almost too good, do you get why I'm suspicious?" I replied. "Did someone other than your father and Mr Hatfield have a say in it?"
"No okay, will you drop it?" There his jaw twitched and he rubbed his fingers across his palm, if anyone knew how to read Christian it was me.
"You're lying." I said dead-panned. "Who else was involved?"
He sighed once more. "No one Serena."
"Tell me."
"Look I didn't come home after a hard day at work to be interrogated by you, have you signed the contract or not?" He was getting annoyed now.
"Not until I know who else had a part in it." I said stubbornly.
"Fine." He said standing to face me. "I'll go to my divorce lawyer tomorrow, pack your things and get out."
"What?" I asked surprised by where this conversation had gone.
"If you haven't signed the contract by now then I doubt you're ever going to. Pack your things and get out because I'm filing for divorce."
"Oh you're just bluffing so you don't have to answer the question."
"Really? You want to try me?" His head had tilted to the side and a small smirk played at his lips. "Sign the contract Serena; it's what's best for you."
"I won't do that until I know all the players involved."
"The players involved are me and you, do you see anyone else's name anywhere in that contract?" I didn't answer him, instead choosing to stand silent until he gave it up. "Fine, you don't want to be the first to sign it, so then I'll do the honours shall I?"
He walked over to his desk in the corner and picked up a pen, scribbled on a blank piece of paper to check it worked and then walked back over to the coffee table where I had thrown the folder down after I got home. He opened the folder and then proceeded to turn to the page that had the required space for the signatures.
His signature was quickly scribbled on the appropriate dotted line before he all but slammed the pen down onto the opened folder. He looked up at me, the challenge clear in his eyes, but this time I was not going to take the bait.
I turned my back on him and walked into my bedroom, slamming the door behind me.
That night was yet another restless one. Who else was involved, because I knew without a doubt there was a third party in this, one that wanted to affect the timing of our divorce, or something more than that? But why wouldn't Christian tell me who it is? This clearly affected me as well as him, didn't I have the right to know any ulterior motives involved in signing a contract?
