Chapter 1

Anastasia’s POV

I fixed my hair in the mirror, positioning it underneath the unattractive cap that was making it fluffy. I straightened my gown, trying to kill time. It was time to face the horrendous party that waited outside. There was screaming and crying and congratulating and obnoxious hair flipping to come, and there was still just over an hour left of the celebrations.

I pushed open the door to be greeted with the hustle and bustle of proud parents taking a group photo. I had to get over there pretty fast. I went round the back of the PE equipment and jumped over a bench. I swung my legs over a gymnastics horse and climbed across the bottom of the ropes in the corner.

“3, 2, 1!” Click. I slid into place smiling and panting at the same time, out of breath from my mini adventure. We left our formation and I looked for my parents in the throng of people. I couldn’t find them so I made my way over to the food stall. I cut a fat slice of cake and took a bite. I realised how hungry I was and quickly began to demolish the rest.

Over in the corner I noticed a girl that looked a little like me, but with fuller lips and more defined eyebrows. I think her name was Savannah. She was on the phone but it was obvious nobody was answering because she kept furiously tapping it and quickly bringing it back up to her ear. Maybe her phone isn’t working, I thought. I was about to go over and offer her mine but suddenly the cake was knocked out of my hands and I was roughly dragged aside.

Savannah’s POV

I selected ‘Mom’ from my contact list and brought my phone up to my ear. It went straight to voicemail so I tried again. Why wasn’t it working? I left a message then decided to try later on.

I heard a slight squeal as a girl was dragged over to the hallway. It looked kind of weird, so I decided to go and investigate a little. I snuck into the hallway behind a group of girls, easily blending in because of the caps and gowns we all sported.

“What do you want?” I heard a voice.

“Listen!” I shifted my position behind the shelves in the corner, pushing some books aside to get a better view.

“I’m a NASA representative. We’ve had our eyes on you for a few weeks now and we think you’re the best suited to this job” What job?

“Job?! What-“  It was the girl from before and a masked stranger. She was cut off.

“Look, I haven’t got time for your questions. The world is going to end in 24 days. You need to find the people on this list.” He hands her an envelope. “They don’t know it yet but they’re going to help you do it.”

“D-Do what?”

“Wasn’t it obvious? The world is ending in 24 days and it is up to you and them to save it. I don’t care how you do it but you can and you will.

“YOU’RE JUST GIVING ME AN ENVELOPE AND TELLING ME TO SAVE THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE WITH COMPLETE STRANGERS!?”

“Yes.” he replies.

“Wha-“

His watch beeps.

“Sorry kiddo, gotta go. Good luck, we’re counting on you.” He runs towards me and I shrink back out of sight as he speeds past. I slowly get back up and the girl stands against the wall, breathing heavily.  She’s most probably shocked and bewildered by all this, as was I.

The world was going to end. Just like that? It couldn’t be possible. Just some NASA thing they’re testing out, seeing how people react. Just some game show and cameras are hidden all around and a host with a microphone and jump out and scream that it was all a joke and they got us good.

It doesn’t happen.

The world is going to end.

And that girl is responsible for protecting seven billion people from the boom.
