The sun hid behind the misty grey clouds which hung low in the air. It was the type of day you'd wish to die on; but who wishes to die? The rumble of the cars engine roared over the pounding rain. The large drops of water relentlessly smacked against the window which was cold to the touch.
He sat in the drivers seat. It was the day after his seventeenth birthday. She sat next to him with a joyous grin on her face. Her bright blue eyes seemed to be glowing against her milky white skin. He tried to ignore the fact that his knuckles were white because he gripped tightly onto the steering wheel.
"Relax Jameson," She began soothingly. He wanted to look at her, but he feared if he looked away from the road, even for a moment, something may appear and he would not notice. "You must get used to driving in the rain if you wish to attend college in Seattle."
His only response was a shaky sigh. He could feel her eyes burning into his cheek, but still he kept his eyes fixed on the watery road ahead. He ignored the trees that grew on the edges of the roads and the vivid green grass which stretched out for miles. The forest where the animals roamed and the birds flew were in his view, yet he pretended it was not there.
"Jameson," She said. For the smallest instant he glanced at her out of the corner of his eye.
"Yes?" He said quickly. The sound of the rain made it difficult for him to focus.
"What is your favorite color?" She asked. For some reason the question annoyed him. Didn't she know the question was pointless and it distracted him from driving?
He furrowed his brow. "Really?"
"Yes really. It's important." In the corner of his vision, he could see her throwing her arms around to emphasize her point. He glanced at her for a beat longer than before.
He sighed angrily. "Yellow."
She didn't even think before saying, "Mine is grey like these clouds."
He looked up at the clouds before realizing that he should be focusing on the road. He stared at the black asphalt as it came closer and went away. Like stages in life.
"Jameson," She said.
He bit his bottom lip before saying, "What is it? I am trying to drive without killing us!" The words came out more forcefully than he had intended, but it was how he was feeling after all.
He glanced at her long enough to watch her lips change from a smile to a frown. Once again his eyes found the road, but now the trees on each side seemed more interesting than before, and the whiteness in his knuckles faded. He saw a deer with giant antlers staring at him for the few seconds that his car flew by.
"Relax, I'm bored is all." She said while releasing a breath. "I just want you to entertain me."
In astonishment he fully turned his head and glared at her. Entertain her? All while he is attempting to drive in the rain without crashing his old ford truck? He wasn't used to driving in the rain. He didn't know how to entertain anyone. Yet she wished him to do both effortlessly. She looked blankly back at him. Then he remembered the road, but much too late.
A large stag stood frightened out of movement directly in front of them. Not knowing what to do, he swerved to right, straight toward the trees. He slammed his foot on the brakes, but it seemed to do nothing. He heard her scream and his frantic breathing before the world turned black.
