If only the amber streetlights would dim,
The glowing windows grow dark.
If only the thousands of headlights would fade,
Then I would see the stars.
As it is, in the vast inky sky,
Only scattered sparks I see.
A few courageous constellations,
Shining valiantly.
If only the rumbling traffic would still;
The trucks cease their growling.
Then, I think, I would hear other sounds.
The sounds of a peaceful evening.
Crickets would chirrup out of sight,
Wind would whisper through the trees.
Birds would warble lullabies,
Cawing sleepily.
If only our bustling lives would slow,
If we took time to sit back, relax and breathe.
If we turned out the lights and gazed at the stars,
Think of the wonders we'd see.
Rivers of light and clouds of diamonds,
Sparkling through the air.
And if you sit there long enough,
You may see yourself reflected there.
