~Ari's POV~
He just stared at us in shock, frozen on the side of the road. Then he sighed, despite all things!
"Arianna, this is what I wanted to say earlier. I think that you don't belong to me anymore, I mean, I knew from the start that there were other boys in your life that would be better off with you than I was. And I'm willing to give up my fight so that you can have whoever you want," he spoke softly and gently.
"But I want you-" I said but he cut me off.
"No you don't Arianna, I can see it in your eyes that you honestly like Chris. Trust me, I'll be ok without you, I just want you to be happy," he sighed sadly but there was the light in his eyes that I hadn't seen in awhile. It was now my turn to freeze. I couldn't speak, it felt like I didn't know how anymore finally I broke the silence.
"Kyle, I understand I guess, I mean, I've always known that you've had most of your heart for Mali so I can understand too. Before me, you were doing just fine because we were friends that could rely on each other to keep their backs. I just don't want us to be enemies, that's all," I told him the truth finally. "The whole point of me not wanting to go out with you is because I thought about after we were over and what would happen to our friendship." I made an unhappy face to him. Another car drove by and we started to move a little bit farther away from the road so we wouldn't draw more attention to ourselves.
"Aww, Ari, C'mere, let me have my last boyfriend to girlfriend hug from you," I blushed as he hugged my tightly.
"I'll miss that, Kyle," I told him truthfully.
"So will I," he commented but I knew I would be better off if we were just friends for now because I had other boys and he had other girls. It was the truth even though I didn't want it to be. The mood lightened a lot after Kyle got that off his back, he bolted in front of Chris and I and we had to fight for the lead. Eventually, on the home stretch of road, the real race began. Ben and Lucas really weren't racers so they weren't in the running like usual. Kyle and Chris were in the lead fighting over the front. The race always ended at Kyle's driveway. It was a three way tie today. The three of us crossed at exactly the same time and we couldn't come to an agreement as to who won. Since I seriously didn't care, it was a two sided battle. And I think that they would still argue three years later on this the way they were going.
Finally, after, what seemed like hours, they stopped fighting and Chris took me home. It was lunch time and he, Ben, Kyle, Nick, and Lucas all planned on coming over later to swim together in the river. Chris took off home after he dropped me off and then we planned on meeting for the river around 2:00. I ate a large BLT sandwich and then I walked swiftly up to my room to put on my gray flowery bikini. That's what I always wore! Pretty much all summer. I looked at myself in the mirror. Did I really deserve them all? Did I deserve to have such reliable wonderful friends? I asked myself, yes I guess, I mean, I wasn't using them. One of my ex's had used me once...
~Flashback~
It was February 28, 2013, the last day of February and my relationship with Daniel. I wrote a note to him telling him that I couldn't be with him anymore. He was using me to do his homework and I didn't like it at all. My mom had been extremely proud when I'd told her this information. I wasn't an object and I wasn't going to be known as 'Daniel's' for forever. I'd known that from the start that we wouldn't ever work out. It just wasn't in me to stay with him.
~End of Flashback~
My mother brought me out of my thoughts.
"Ari, what's the matter, Chris is waiting for you at the door! What's wrong?" She asked me worriedly.
"Oh you know, remember dating Daniel..." I said sadly.
"Really? That was like two years ago, wasn't it?"
"Yeah, somethin' like that," I mumbled and ripped my bikini top all the way on and went to meet Chris.
As my mom had told me, Chris was waiting at the door.
"Wow, you're hot," he said and I blushed. I knew we had not made it official yet that we were boyfriend girlfriend yet but I think that was to come sometime.
"Thank you," I blushed darker than before when I saw Ben, Kyle, Lucas and Nick come out from behind him.
"Ready?" He asked.
"Yeah let me just grab my cover-up..." I ran to grab the purple flowery cover-up from the living room. I don't really know what it was doing in there but I didn't linger while I threw it on over my head and ran over the hill to catch up with them.
"Boo!" Chris yelled and jumped out of the bushes. I screamed as loud as I could before falling to the ground laughing.
"Hey," I mock-pouted, "that's wasn't nice." I said trying intentionally to sound like a three year old.
"I know, but I know that you love it too," he knew me too well.
He carefully guided me down the hill and I finally noticed there was a girl in this group that hadn't been here before...
"Who's that?" I asked, whispering to Chris.
"Nick's girlfriend Lacey," he smirked.
"Oh, why are you smiling like that?"
"Because you always sound so innocent when you talk like that!"
"Don't complement me! I hate that! You should know!"
"I do but you're cute mad!"
"Call me cute one more time-" then something cut me off.
Maybe it was the large deer standing in front of us in the woods before bounding off, or it could've been Nick and Lacey making out heavily in front of us, or possibly even the Canadian geese flying over. But I really think it was Chris who stopped me from taking anymore when he whispered 'I love you' in my ear.
