How did I get here? I don't remember people dressing like that before. I was just walking around the asylum. Where are the nurses and doctors? Where am I?
"Excuse me, but where am I?" I asked a lovely looking girl about my age. She smiled and nodded.
"You are in Blackcastle. Umm, may I ask what are you wearing?" She asked kindly.
"Oh this, they're... um... they're pajamas." I said. I'm such a bad liar, but she seemed to go with it. "Do you mind me asking what the date is?"
"Um... no, it's ok. Today is July 24, 1882."
"Thank you. May I ask your name?"
"Sarah, my name is Sarah." She said, and then she vanished. She faded like I blinked out of a dream. What then came into view was what I had left. It was the asylum. I was right where I had been standing.
"Sarah! I need to find Sarah! She is gone!" I yelled frantically. The nurses pulled me back into a room filled with vial of clear liquid and starched white jackets. I was lead toward the only chair in the room. The chair was made of iron and bore six leather straps. The nurses strapped me into the chair, and began to rummage through a drawer that was hidden by the jackets. They had placed a six millimeter syringe along with a vial on the counter above the drawer. They grabbed a jacket and walked toward me.
"There is no one here named Sarah. Nobody named Sarah has visited you. No one has come to see you." They taunted. They injected the cool liquid into my veins, and unbuckled the straps freeing me from the iron chair. I tried to run out of the room, but they grabbed me from behind. They slipped on the straight jacket and secured it behind my back.
"I need to find Sa-" I fell onto the tile floor and blacked out. Sarah came into view. "Sarah I need your help." Sarah came around behind me and unbuckled the jacket. "Thank you."
"I will try but I make no promises." She handed me the jacket and walked away. " If you want my help you have to keep up."
"Where are we going?" I asked as we arrived at metal gates. As the gates opened I saw a beautiful brick manor. Through the gates were incredible green courtyards and stone fountains.
Sarah turned to me, then the opposite way as if checking for unwelcome beings. She charged for the door causing me to run to keep up.
"I don't even know your name. If I'm going to help you I'll need to know your name." She stated before opening the door, walking in, and before I was inside, closed it. Startled, I walked away from the door and sat on the ground. Could I trust her? Who was I kidding? I could trust her. I stood up and walked to the door. I knocked three times then the door opened. Sarah stood there like she was waiting for me, so I officially introduced myself.
"Hello Sarah, I don't know your last name, but now you will know my name. I am Blake, Blake Adams."
"Why hello, Blake! Its very nice to finally know your name. My name is Sarah Whiteside. Welcome to the Whiteside manor." She swiftly motioned me in the door , closed it for the final time, and stepped up the stairs. "My study door is open. Down the corridor first door on your ringhand side."
I assumed she meant left hand side because wedding rings go on the left hand. In fact I was right. It was a lovely study. Oak walls with olive green detailing. The colors drained from the walls becoming white. I turned in a circle, then the asylum surrounded me. The nurses tackled me and stabbed me with a morphine filled syringe. The lights blinked out, or was that just me? Black engulfed my vision as my head spun. I fell, but it felt as though I would never stop. There was a pounding in my ears, my face felt damp, and my lungs wouldn't fill. It was unusually cold. I blinked back into the asylum. I had to figure this out. With or without Sarah, I would find out what was going on. My mind raced. Maybe I couldn't do it on my own.
"Hey, can I get my parents here as soon as possible, like tomorrow?" I questioned a passing nurse.
"We will try to arrange that. Tomorrow, are you sure?" she asked with a confused look.
"I am absolutely sure." I said hopefully confidently enough to convince her. I would ask my parents why they sent me here. They might know a sarah. Was Sarah a friend of mine from school? I can't remember many people from that place. School was torture, that's all I could remember.
Once the nurse left I started to walk down the hall. Everything transformed into a familiar street with every step I took. I saw Sarah. I ran. I needed to talk to her. She was close. Just a few steps and I would have reached her. I smacked into something. I looked around, yet there was nothing there. I kept trying to reach Sarah, but I was blocked away. I slammed my hands against what was holding me back. A wall melted into view. I was back. I was back at the asylum. At the end of the hall. Face against the white wall.
Bursts of laughter erupted from the hall. I peeled my body away from the wall, and ran to my room in embarrassment. I slumped on my bed. A young girl about twelve appeared at my door. She knocked and smiled, so I let her in. She sat on the floor looking up. She sat there for at the least ten minutes before she spoke.
"Hey mister, are you ok? I saw you run into the wall, and it looked painful. How does your face feel?" She asked in such a sweet tone I was a little suspicious.
"My face feels fine. Who are you?"
"My name is Kai. What is your name?"
"I'm Blake."
"That's cool. Why are you here? My parents sent me here because I told them about floating girls and invisible boys. They told me they were just dreams. I never believed them, so now I'm here."
"Wow, my parents just sent me here. They never told me why though."
"Well that's just rude. Will you see your parents soon? My parents come and visit me at least twice a month."
"Yes I'll see them hopefully tomorrow, and hopefully Sarah."
"Who in Hades house is Sarah?" Kai asked in a sly voice. Did she think Sarah was a love interest? Maybe my sister? Would I have to explain to Kai who Sarah was? If so, how would I accomplish the task?
"Hey, Blake are you ok? You are looking really pale. It's ok. I've met Sarah too." This made me topple off of my bed. "I was just messing with you to see what would happen. I'm sorry. Sarah is not who you think she is, Blake. We will go together. I'll help you if you help me. We are special. Different from everyone else, but we have to work together." That word, together, hit me like a brick wall. Well, more like just a brick. What did she mean together? I can't work with someone else. I never have, so why start now? What does Kai know about Sarah?
