I screamed, which is not like me. I'm usually a very collected person, but suicide is something that can undo me.
I lunged forward, thankful for my fast reflexes. I managed to grab his wrist as he fell, accidentally slamming him into the side of the building and causing me to fall onto my cheek.
I winced, but refused to let go. He was actually struggling against me, like going splat on a city sidewalk was all the rage, and he was a teen trying to fit in. Of course, I wasn't going to let that happen. He may be a convicted criminal, but no-one deserves to die like that, all twisted and grotesque beneath people's feet.
He looked up at me, a grim and morbid determination in his eyes. With his free hand, he reached up and began to pry my saving fingers from his straining wrist.
"What are doing? Are you crazy? You'll die!" I was yelling at him, pleading, stop, stop, but he kept pulling.
"Of course I'll die. But that doesn't matter. I've told you- they're after you! They'd kill me for telling you, but I'd rather die by my own hands. Don't you see? I'm dead either way!" He looked insane and wild, prying my hand from his.
"No! The agency can protect you!" I yelled over the wind, only half believing my words. I was stuck in then moment, anything to keep this man alive.
"With what, iron bars and concrete floors? No thank you. I'd- rather- be- DEAD!" With one final tug, the man I had worked so hard to catch plummetted downward.
I turned away at the last second, unable to watch him hit the ground. All the morbid curiosity in the world couldn't make me want to see that.
Finally, I pushed off the roof and stood, shaking. I'd like to think that it was from adrenaline, or the wind, but I knew differently.
I turned to face my coworkers, and I'm sure they knew what happened just by looking at my face.
"He- he just jumped-" I said, before collapsing into a shaking mess.
