 Chapter 1

Nayla sat in a sterile hospital room listening to the beeps of the monitors as her boyfriend Brandon laid in his bed asleep. He had been in the hospital for two weeks straight and the doctors were no where close to figuring out what he had. At least that’s what his parents told her. She didn’t have the heart to ask the doctors and hear something bad so she just sat there and most days and listened to the updates his parents recited.

Brandon and Nayla met when she was sixteen and he was seventeen. He was the popular boy and she was the person no one paid attention to. It sounds like such a cliché but that’s who they were. Brandon would have never talked to her if their chemistry teacher hadn’t assigned them to be partners on the next assignment. At first, they both protested but the more they got to talking the more they had in common. Soon it went from meeting once a week at lunch to hanging out at each other’s houses everyday. From then it blossomed into a beautiful relationship.

Now two years later Nayla didn’t know if he was going to make it. She hoped of course but he barely could stay awake for more than fifteen minutes at a time. He was so out of it he didn’t even know she was there sometimes. It seemed like everything in his body was shutting down all at once and the doctors didn’t know how to stop it. First, it was just a little bout with pneumonia, they gave him some antibiotics to help his system battle it which turned into his kidneys shutting down which in turn led to his liver failing. No matter the medication they administered nothing seem to work. It was safe to say it didn’t look good.

She didn’t want to give up hope though. Somewhere deep inside she hoped he would make it. She loved him to much to let him go.  While he was sleep she scooted her chair closer to the bed and grabbed his hand in hers.

“Brandon I love you so much and I want you to fight this...this...this thing that’s making you sick. I want to spend the rest of my life with you so you can’t leave me. I don’t know if I can make it with out you”

She kissed his forehead and just sat there looking for some response. His eyes fluttered open weakly and he looked straight at her straining to talk.

“Nayla I gotta go this is it for me”

She felt tears stinging her cheeks already.

“You have to move on from this don’t let this hold you back. I held on for as long as I could. Just remember I... I...I love you”

BEEEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEP

His hand went limp in her hands and he started convulsing. His body shook violently everywhere as his eyes rolled back. Alarms went off every where in the room and she just stood there frightened. Nurses rushed in there, slid the bed rails down and tried to save his life. They screamed for syringes filled with this and that then there were the paddles. She watched as they placed them on his chest not once but three times and his body shot up like a raggedy and doll somebody was pulling. She knew it before they even said it, he was gone.

“Ok im calling this now, Time of death is 4:42 pm,” she says while holding his wrist and looking at the clock.

Nayla stood there to shocked to move. He was gone. And she was all alone. His parents rushed in a minute later and all she heard was his mothers screams. Not wanting to be in there any longer, she left.

1 Month later

Time seemed to go buy so slow for Nayla ever since Brandon died. Everyone whispered when she passed them in the hallway about Brandon. She just couldn’t take it anymore. Graduation was only two weeks away and when it was over she planned to go stay with her Grandmother in Utah for the summer to get away. It was hard being in school now, without seeing something that reminded her of him. Even siting in class no staring out the window brought back memories. She had a perfect view of the trees they sat underneath every lunch period. Memories flooded her head in a whirlwind.

“Ms. Evans are you with us” her history teacher asked standing right in front of her.

“Yes I was just thinking I’m so sorry for daydreaming in class” she said while blushing.

“It’s ok I’ve heard what has happen to you and I know your going through a hard time but please try to pay attention a little bit”

“Yes mam” she whispered and turned her attention to the board.

The last month had been the hardest for her. Her family rarely talked to her because they didn’t want to bring up Brandon by mistake. Brandon’s parents never returned any of her phone calls. It was as if they died right along with Brandon. She tried to not think of him but it was so hard. Every thought she had revolved around him. When her phone would ring she answered it desperately wishing it was him even though she knew it wouldn’t be. To make matters worse she seemed to be coming down with some weird flu and it was taking forever to go away.

        Class ended and she grabbed her books and bag quickly so she could leave and possibly ignore the whispers. She had Math class next but she was in no mood to sit and listen to some boring guy discuss Calculus and its importance in ever day life. Come on like Calculus would ever be important. She power walked it to her locker and put her books in then slamming it shut. Everyone was hurrying to their next class so no one noticed when she slipped through the side doors and out to the parking lot. Her car was at the very back of the lot so she almost ran there. When she saw her car come into view she dashed to the door rapidly and opened the door. In a matter of minutes she was gone.

        She drove around for half hour thinking about where she could go when she just decided to head home. Her parents weren’t there so she could go home without anyone noticing. Twenty minutes later, she was pulling up into her driveway.

        As soon as she opened the door she walked to the kitchen to fix something to eat. She was starving since she decided to skip the torture of breakfast this morning. There was nothing really in the fridge so she went with the classic peanut butter and jelly combo.  Taking out all the necessary items, she proceeded to make her sandwich.

        She picked it up and took a bite loving the taste then all of a sudden the taste made her sick and she ran to the bathroom. Within a matter of minutes she threw up half the contents of her stomach which was weird considering she hadn’t eaten all day. Wiping her mouth of she turned the sink on, splashed some water on her face, and looked around. She looked at the calendar she kept pinned on her wall. Everything seemed to go black. Today was the 26th and she was supposed to get her period on the fifth. She was late. And not by a day but twenty-one days!. Never a day in her life since she started her period was she late. Most of the things she did next came in a blur.

        Forgetting the half eaten sandwich, the mess in the bathroom she grabbed her keys and headed for the car. Once she was in she drove to the nearest Walgreens almost killing a old lady trying to cross the street. When she was in the store calmly walked the aisles until she found the thing she needed.  9.99$. The rest of her life depended on something that costs 9.99$. Talk about life. Grabbing one in a hurry, she walked to the cashier. After buying it she used the store bathroom to get it over with.

            The Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test works by detecting the pregnancy hormone in your urine and is over 99% accurate when used from the day your period is due. You can use it up to 4 days before your period is due but if you get a ’Not Pregnant’ result, you should test again when your period is due. The levels of pregnancy hormone in your urine may not be high enough to be detected yet.

The Color Change Tip and the Control Window give you extra reassurance by showing you that the test is working.

            She read the instructions and all the information and went for it.

~~~~~3 minutes later~~~~~
        Her life was over. She looked at the stick again and couldn’t believe her eyes. It’s not like she slept around. Brandon was her first and only. They took all the necessary precautions but things happened and it broke. They didn’t notice until it was to late. But it was her first time. Nothing was suppose to happen.
