Cold Moon

Chapter one

It's been a day since we left so suddenly on a boat. The front of the boat slices the water in two. I put my arms on the railing and lean on them. Tomorrow, when it will be almost evening, we'll port in the North Region. An icily wind plays with my hair. I wonder how Shakey is doing. If I only were stronger, I could've protected him. I shake my head and sigh. Why? Why didn't I have the strength to defend him?

"Aren't you cold?" Jaël asks amazed, pointing at my top. She shivers.

"Not at all." I shrug. I stretch out my arm to prove I'm not. She accepts.

"Wow!" She exclaims, "You're boiling! Are you sure you don't have a fever?"

"I'm perfectly fine." I recall I never told Jaël that I'm a werewolf. I'd better keep it silent. Then I lift my head up to stare at the horizon, which is slowly going from red to dark blue.

"I hate the cold. I hate going north." Jaël mumbles annoyed.

"But you can create fire, doesn't that warm you up?" I blink my eyes.

"That doesn't mean anything." She looks away agitated. I smile at her. I view how the moon ascends. It's almost another full moon. By then, I must find a way to free Shakey as soon as possible, or else I'm afraid that I won't be that lucky like last time.

"I'm going to sleep." I say, while walking back to my cabin. Once I'm there, I drop myself on my bed. I list all my thoughts in my mind. I slam a frustrated fist against the wall of the cabin. Honestly, I'm not in control of myself at all. Since Shakey got taken away from me, I've been afraid, yet full with anger. I have to keep my emotions under control. During my travels, I've learnt about them. I feel guilty for being unable to save the one I love. There's hatred towards the Kitaling. Most of all, hope lives in me. I will find Shakey. I lie down on the bed and turn around, longing for a restful night of dreams.

A face looms up in front of me. Grey eyes stare at me. I recoil from them. I want to escape, but there's no way out. Loneliness appears, spreads its wings and holds me close. I try to fight it off. It's too strong. It consumes me. I fade away.

I scream against the empty walls. I realize that it was only a dream, a nightmare. I wipe a few sweat drops away. I clamp my arms around my legs. He's not here to comfort me. Sadness overwhelms me. A hole starts to rip open in my heart. A deep, dark hole, beginning to fill itself with my sorrow. It streams into the gap. I get up and walk back to the upper deck. Once again, I stand still and gaze upon the sky. The wind blows softly. I close my eyes and inhale the salty smell. Drizzle falls down from the sky. Or at least that's what I think. It only looks whiter and feels colder. It melts from the moment it touches my body. I lift my head to the clouds and close my eyes. Shakey... Things feel empty without him by my side. I see his face in front of me in my mind. His usual bright smile, his blue eyes which sparkle and his blonde hair. Time moves so slow. The sun climbs higher. People get on and off the deck. I don't pay attention to them.

"There you are!" A voice says behind me. I don't have to turn around to know that it's Jaël. "I've been looking for you!"

"Sorry for making you worry." I answer automatically.

"Thinking?" She asks, also resting her arms on the railing.

"Yeah." I answer.

"I have the perfect remedy when you feel bad," She smiles, "Follow me."

Curiosity takes control of me and I do as she told me to. We go back into the ship and enter a fancy, broad room. The interior is breathtaking. I hadn't been here before, since I didn't want to be among people. Lamps shine luminously on the wooden walls. It's as if everything is sparkling. The ground is covered with a red carpet. We go down a staircase with a balustrade on both sides. Once downstairs, the room is filled with expensive tables and chairs. At the left side there's a large buffet. Jaël paces happily to the buffet. Actually, it's like she's hopping to it. She takes a plate and puts almost everything they serve on it. I pick sandwiches, different kinds of meat and something they call 'pudding'. We sit down on the chairs of a random table. Not that many people are around yet.
