Chapter Three

"And the winner of the final assessment for basic training is... Team Bravo!" said Sergeant Adams, indicating the group of boys who stood, panting, next to a thunderstruck Cutter, Keegan, Antonach, and Tarkus. "They just barely managed to hold out against Team Echo." The sergeant pointed at Cuttek's squad with a disapproving look.

Cuttek's team had recently been named Echo Squad, but they werem not feeling the spirit of being given a new name. They had been sure that they would win, but apparently, according to Sergeant Adams, the leader of Team Bravo, a guy named Chris, had just passed the finish line before Keegan and the rest of Team Echo. Second place was nothing to sneeze at, but the squad had been sure that they would win. Keegan felt that he had let his friends down, but they were congratulating him, making him feel even more miserable, because he knew that they were only being upbeat to be nice.

"It's okay, dude," said Tarkus with forced enthusiasm. "Second place is better than third." Keegan looked up at Tarkus and the rest of his team. "I let you guys down," he said miserably.

"It wasn't your fault," said Cuttek. "Any of us would have fallen down. Well, maybe except Tarkus," he added jokingly.

"Look, dude," Tarkus said. "Nobody gives a damn about Chris and his group. They're all jerks anyway. Always have been, always will be. Combat will straighten them out." Keegan looked at Tarkus and his group gratefully. "Thanks, guys. Now lets go see whether or not we're going to Iraq."
