Chapter One

Leaving isn't Always Fun

~~~
I was watching my little brother George when I got the call. It was the 21st of April, and my parents were away on a business trip. It was raining too, a sign that something bad was going to happen. George and I were about to watch "Cupcake Wars" when they called. I forget who it was, but clearly remember what they said. The woman told me about the plane crash that my parents were in, and I dropped the phone. My parents were dead. We weren't really that close, but they were my parents. I ran into the living room and explained to George what happened in a way he could understand while I held him. He was only three, but he deserved to know. A few tears leaked out of my eyes, and we just sat there.
The next day we got another phone call from a woman named Karen. She has been a friend of my dads since college. She told us we would be staying with her for a while and to pack up our belongings. After a few hours we were packed and ready. I still didn't understand how it happened, but it did.
Now, George and I are driving to the Maine airport. Maine has been our home for as long as I can remember. We will be leaving all our friends. Paris, my best friend since pre-k, showed up right before the taxi, and broke down. She was crying for us not to go, and that we could stay with her. It was very dramatic. And yet, she's a very dramatic person. My little brother has been holding my hand fiercely the entire ride, because he's a bit scared of Paris. I don't blame him though. We are almost at the airport now, and it's pretty big. George has never been on a plane before, but I'm sure he'll love it.
(on the plane)
My stomach dropped, and I thought I was going to be sick. I've never like planes, but George obviously loves them. How in the...? Oh fudge stick! My wallet somehow slid under my seat. I reached for it. Stretch, stretch, stretch, almost there... *sigh* (of relief) I scooped it up, and tossed it into my purse/bag. You see, I'm trying to stop swearing so I'm not a bad influence for my brother. Speaking of George, he seems to be asleep. Lucky duck. Maybe I could just take a little nap. No, a nap won't hurt. We do have a long flight ahead of us...
