I met this boy when I first moved to Elk Hills. I think I fell in love immediately but I never admitted it out loud to myself. I didn't have a cellphone to ask for his number because we were poor people. I couldn't bring myself to talk to him because I wasn't very good at creating conversations. That was until I saw this dumb commercial. Well...it wasn't exactly dumb. It was really cute and made me smile and cry.

It was a gum commercial. You know the gum called "Extra"? I went to Walmart and bought 5 packs of the "Extra" mint gum that day.

"Luke...bro get up!" Michael groaned trying to yank the sheets off me.

"My heart does not give me motivation or strength to do anything. All it desires is to lay in this bed all day and sulk. Didn't the graceful beauty always say...listen to your heart? That is what I am doing Michael Clifford." I mumbled with my eyes closed. My best friend groaned.

"Here we go again..." he sighed then continued, "listen you need to stop getting your heart broken for no reason Lucas."

"That's not my name." I replied deciding to ignore his words before he called me by my false name.

"Luke, you have been here for a week, you're welcome to stay bro but you're starting to smell really bad."

"Does it look like I care?" I muttered in despair.

"Luke get up and stop acting like a defeated Romeo. Either you go find yourself a new Juliet, or get over it. You've cried yourself a river for a week now and flooded my room."

I lifted my head up with a small smile. "Wow Michael that was so good you actually caught my attention for a sec." I chuckled. Michael smirked and dusted off the nonexisting dust on his shoulders.

"I write songs buddy, I can be poetic too. Now get the hell up or I'll get you up myself."

"Actually that would be super." I mumbled lifting my arms up so he could grab them. Michael groaned for the fiftieth time but obliged. I stood up and almost fell over but I grabbed onto to Michael and trudged into the bathroom. After I shut the door I glanced myself in the mirror for the first time in a week and heard Michael sigh outside my door in relief.

........

Michael thought taking me to a club would cheer me up and help me find new chicks but that just gave me a way to escape and sit on the rooftop of the building...even though I was deathly scared of heights.

I stared at the cars beneath me that looked like specks of lights. The air was chilly up here but I enjoyed the calm and music playing the distance. Though my perfect silence was then disturbed when a horny couple stumbled up here in a full heated make out session. I groaned and turned around just in time to see a girl run up and grab the couple telling them this was the roof and not the bedroom. I didn't know they had a bedroom here?

I almost sighed in relief when I noticed that the same girl was back but alone this time. I decided to ignore her but she sat down next to me.

"Hi." She spoke waiting for answer but I just gave her a small fake smile in reply. "You probably don't remember me do you?" She asked and that's when I actually looked at her. I didn't remember her at all...
"That's okay if you don't. I just moved here and we've met but it was very brief." She mumbled nodding her head to herself. I nodded also but wished she was gone. "Are you going to tell me what's wrong?"

I shook my head and stared out at the endless lights. No I wasn't going to talk to some random girl that moved here. We were silent after that. Then I noticed her digging in her pocket looking for something. Then she placed it right next to me. Before I could look though she was gone.

In the darkness, I couldn't see what it was but when I picked it up I smelled it right away. Mint gum. Did my breath smell? I opened the package and flipped open the flap to see a small message on it.

smile. and appreciate what you have that others don't.

I wonder what that was for...but for some reason I had a good feeling. I smiled and stuffed it in my pocket before grabbing a piece then heading downstairs. I spotted the same girl who was on the roof with me swaying to the music with a bottle of beer in hand. I watched her from afar...chewing my gum then I remembered.

She sat behind me, the girl who smelled like mint all the time. How could I not remember? I think her name was Casey? Or Kaylee? One of the two. I decided to walk over to her and ask her.

"May I ask what your name is anonymous girl?"

"What?" She yelled back at me and cupped her ear.

"What's your name." I spoke louder and she 'oh'ed.

"I'm Bailey."

"Hi Bailey I'm-"

"Luke Hemmings. I know." She laughed. Even with a beer in hand I could almost taste her minty breath. Or maybe that was the gum...

"Wow...you must know a lot about me." I joked and she frowned.

"Sadly yes but you don't."

I ignored her disappointment instead and asked about the gum.

"So what's with you and mint gum?" I questioned. Her frown turned into a small sly smile.

"Sometimes fresh breath is the key to EVERYTHING!" She slurred then I realised she was drunk. "Huh Luke? What do YOU think?" She smiled as her eyes fluttered closed and began to slowly lean on me for support.

I woke with a headache and I knew right away I was hungover. I stretched my arms and yawned. Yesterday was strangely a blur. Usually I didn't drink that much. I sat up deciding to get a glass of water but I found it on the bedside table next to me.

Someone must have brought me home last night. My eyes widened though when I saw a pack of Extra spearmint gum carefully set next to some aspirin. I grabbed the gum and opened the flap to find a message.

" sometimes fresh breath is the key to EVERYTHING" -L

"Luke." I whispered and smiled to myself falling backwards onto the bed. This was the start to a minty love story.
