Alternate Version: Tapped in a Dream's Shadow

Prologue

She opened the door and put her keys down in the crystal bowl on the small table to the right of the front door. Sighing, she shut the door behind her, locking it and putting the chain on, before walking through the foyer and toward her the stairs. As she went, she scooped up her waterfall of ebony hair from down her back and tied it in a high ponytail with a black hair-tie from around her wrist. She was exhausted from school after sneaking around and avoiding a plethora of her peers, and all she wanted to do was get out of the horrid dress she was wearing and collapse on her bed so she could sleep.

It was not to be.

"Autumn! Hunny, could you come here for a bit, please?" She heard her mother call from the sitting room. Groaning, she turned around and went back down the stairs she had begun to climb and made her way to the sitting room. She saw her dad sitting on the black settee and her mother on the ugly yellow armchair that she insisted was the most gorgeous thing in the world. It was not. It was a monstrosity that should be burned. She sighed again.

"Yes, mother?"

"Your father and I have decided that it is time for a change of pace. That being said, we will be moving!" She did not share her mother's enthusiasm.

"Where, exactly, will we be moving mother?" Autumn asked, a slight hiss to her question. She looked over to her father in order to gauge his reactions to the conversation.

"Well, we are moving to Farmers Branch," she replied with a haughty sniff.

"Autumn, I know you don't want to move - believe me, I know - but, I think this will be good for you," her dad said, speaking for the first time. He gave her a meaningful look that made her stop and think for a second. Maybe this will be good for me, she thought for a moment with a miniscule smile. She looked at her father hopefully.

"So, this means I no longer have to cross-dress?" Yes, Autumn is a boy.

His mother sputtered for a moment, her pale brown eyes darkening as she scowled, "Of course you will continue to wear the clothes I've bought for you!"

Autumn's face fell as his mother spoke. The thought of continuing to live his life as a girl hurt; he hated it. No one even knew he existed. Everyone believed he was at boarding school, thinking Autumn to be his sister. However, that was the problem. Autumn didn't have a sister; he was an only child. He shook his head as he felt that familiar sting in his nose and behind his eyes - that telltale sign that tears were gathering in his eyes.

"I don't want to wear the clothes you bought for me, mother! I'm sick of it! You have had me doing this since I was eight years old! When I came out as gay when I was twelve, you damn near put me on estrogen! Who does that?!" Autumn exclaimed heatedly. He was so sick of his mother controlling his life; his father tried to make it easier, but even that was not enough. Autumn was fine with moving, but he was not okay with having to continue living his life as a lie and constantly in fear of someone finding out that he was not who he said he was. Did she not realise just how much trouble he could get in? Hell, how much trouble they could get in?!

"Autumn, hunny, I know you are stressed right now with having this news dropped on you and with school, so I am willing forgive this little outburst, but I will not allow it happen a second time, " his mother said standing from her spot on the ugly chair. She continued to speak with a rather snobbish tone,

"You are probably tired from school, so head up to your room, do your homework, then get some rest, and I will call you down for dinner once it is ready." She turned with a haughty sniff and walked out of the room, passing him on her way to the kitchen. Autumn shot her a dirty look - oh, if looks could kill - from where he stood, still in the doorway of the living room; his eyes followed her with an acidic glare. Vile wench, he thought mutinously.

"Autumn?" He heard his dad call softly. He looked away from the direction his mother went in order to look at his father. His pale grey gaze caught his father's eyes; the man looked solemn as he watched his son from his seat.

"Yes, sir?" Autumn answered almost inaudibly.

"I know you hate this, but I feel like this could be a great opportunity for us. Especially for you." His father said quietly, "I just want you to be happy. I will help you as much as possible to make this year - and the rest to come - better than the last nine have been."

"I know, daddy. Thank you." Autumn replied, just barely above a whisper. He sniffled as his father stood from his seat and hugged him tightly.

"You're my little boy, and I just want you happy. I know I haven't been doing enough these last few years, but this will be different." His father promised. Father and son stood there for a few more minutes before releasing one another, and Autumn went up to his room with a small smile; his thoughts on getting some rest, then, later, he would begin to pack his things.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Autumn's mother was muttering to herself angrily.

"I will have a daughter. One way or another, you will be my perfect little girl, Autumn. Your mark my words. You mark my fucking words, child of mine."

~Prologue End ~

--------------------------------------------------

So, I'm sure you guys are wondering why I wrote a new prologue. I did this because I wasn't happy with the old one. I will be rewriting the entire story, albeit slowly, because I'm just not happy with it. It will be the same for the most part, just...better...I guess.

Also, I have gotten a new computer (I should say laptop, really) and definitely plan on working harder to give you guys updates, more in-depth content, longer chapters, etc., and I really appreciate all of you who have been patient with me.
