"He will NOT go to Hogwarts!" yelled Lyall Lupin from downstairs.
"Mr. Lupin, I assure you..." began the calm, collected voice of Albus Dumbledore but Lyall cut across him again.
"He is a freak, Albus, an unnatural glitch in nature, a danger to himself and to others' safety. He will not go to that school. He should go to a camp. That's where those...," he couldn't get himself to say werewolves,"...things go. That's where they belong, Albus! Not in a wizarding school!"
"We will agree to disagree, Mr. Lupin," said Dumbledore serenely. "Now, may I see him?"
Not waiting to hear his father's answer Remus turned and sprinted off back up the stairs from where he had been eavesdropping. His breath caught in his chest as he dived into his room and shut the door as quickly as he dared.
"Mr. Lupin?" There was a quiet knock on the door and two men entered the room.
The first was Albus Dumbledore with his flowing white beard hanging almost to his feet and two twinkling blue eyes peering out from the half-moon spectacles that sat askew on his crooked nose. The second man was shorter and much younger, with an air about him that seemed to radiate nervousness. He had short, curly, brown hair and brown eyes which seemed to judge everything they passed over. In his hand he held a large, brown and battered suitcase. Remus suddenly wished he'd tidied his room more recently.  There were piles of parchment and quills all over the floors even though Remus had no one to write to. Books lay everywhere in a kind of battlement around his bed and the table in the corner was scratched and worn.
"This is Mr. Scamander," said Dumbledore, this time speaking directly to Remus. "The author of..."
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," Remus said promptly and then he flushed a deep scarlet.
"Yes," said Dumbledore with a hint of amusement pricking his voice.
Mr. Scamander stepped gingerly forward around a large pile of books.
"Newt Scamander," he said, apparently addressing his boots. "A pleasure Mr. Lupin," he held out his hand awkwardly.
"Umm... Remus Lupin," Remus said, "and a pleasure to meet you too," he added after a second. "Then he turned beet red and muttered "I don't suppose you would sign my book..?"
Dumbledore laughed uproariously and even Mr. Scamander cracked a smile.
"Um.. of course Mr. Lupin," he said and then his eyes darted around the room searching for something. "Er... do you have a quill which isn't... you know... broken?"
"Oh, yeah," Remus said and embarrassedly negotiated his way around a tottering pile of parchment to search through a drawer in his desk. He pulled out his best quill. "Here," he said awkwardly, "and thankyou."
"I'm supposing you heard our conversation downstairs," said Dumbledore as Mr. Scamander signed Remus' book on the least battered surface he could find.
"Yes," he mumbled.
"Well then, you will know that your dad took a little persuading to let us see you and allow you go to Hogwarts."
"He won't let me go!" Remus blurted. "It's the only place I might have friends and he won't let me go!"
"That is why I am here," said Dumbledore with a kindly smile. "With a little help from Mr. Scamander here and his wife Tina I have arranged for you to go and stay with them until Hogwarts starts on the first of September."
"Yes," piped in Mr. Scamander, "Teeny and I will be delighted to have you Mr. Lupin..."
"Remus," he cut across, "it's Remus."
"Ok... Remus," said Mr. Scamander and he gave another one of his twitchy smiles.
Remus turned back to Dumbledore.
"I can really go?! I can go to Hogwarts?"
"Why of course you can," said Dumbledore gently. "Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it."
