Luke's POV

Goddess, I hate Mondays.

But it isn't the school-day blues that's got me down; hell, I wish that was my only problem. It's been about 10 years since The Rogue War's started and honestly I can't remember life before the wars. Sure I was eight at the time and I probably spent most of my time playing with action figures or something but it all seems a blur now. Training with the pack, preparing for a battle, and looking over my shoulder has become my constant daily routine.

After taking over the night-shift, I've been doing nothing security sweeps around the entire Southern Pack territory well until first daybreak. I barely have the energy to lift my head up let alone pay attention in class, and telling from the exhausted and pale faces of my pack mates I'm not alone.

I pull into an available parking spot in front of Howard High dreading going in, but having no other choice since my parents would kill me if they found out I'd skipped. I just want to get through this day as peacefully and quietly as possible...

"Hello, Luke," Veronica's sing-song voice greets me from across the parking lot as I exit my car waving enthusiastically. Even from this distance I can smell her perfume and effect only gets worse as she gets closer.

I resist the urge to groan out loud and instead make a good effort of walking in the opposite direction of the approaching figure and blend with the rest of the students trying to squeeze through the one set of double-doors that our school laughably calls an "entrance". My escape proves not to be fast enough as she blocks off my current route easily.

"Didn't you see me back there? I even waved. I could have sworn we made eye contact..." and I allow her to cheerfully pull me straight to the school entrance

I grunt in return not even

I respond deadpan, shoving my way through the crowd to my locker.

She rudely pushes the crowd in front of us and is met with various swear words  and hateful looks but her only response is an eye roll and stiff middle finger before she turns to me with a brillanf smile."Guess what?" She squeals.

I sigh deeply, even more exhausted than I already am if that's even possible. "What?"

"We're getting a new student today! Supposedly it's a huge deal with the other seniors but I didn't even know we were expecting anyone?" She grabs my arm close to her breasts and starts batting her eyelashes in what I assume is seduction. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about this, would you?"

Finally getting to my locker, I deftly pry my arm from her grasp to but my book bag away and then grab my books for my next two classes. After I make sure I have everything, I turn to her with my best poker face expression.

"I don't know anything about a transfer student," I tell her, sidestepping around her and heading to English. She catches up to me fairly quickly for someone walking like a newborn giraffe on stilts.

"Oh, come on Luke! You're the son of the Alpha; if a squirrel wandered onto our pack territory you would be the first to know. So don't try to feed me that I-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about B.S. Those pretty emerald eyes of yours are telling me you know more than you are letting on, isn't that right young Alpha Luke?"

I repress a sneer at the title my entire pack insists on calling me even though I hate it with a passion. Instead I shrug, unconcerned with her aggressive insisting. "You probably know more about it than I do," I say turning a corner getting a visual of my classroom beyond the throngs of students.

She's right though, I'm lying. I know all about the new student, or students rather, and actually did meet the head of their clan last week when they were asking for permission to stay on our territory. Yeah, you heard that right. A clan as in...
