"You know this party downstairs is for you. Why are you still at your desk working?"

"Because I don't want a pile of work waiting for me Monday morning." Billie replied while pounding away on her laptop.

She was neck deep in editorials, and she wasn't in the mood to celebrate her birthday. She wasn't sure why she was in such a funk, especially since she was in a good place in her life. She had a flourishing career, a lovely home, and amazing new friends. Plus she was in the best shape of her life. But she still felt out of sorts, and as if something else was missing.

"And besides, we both know the real celebration is happening tomorrow at my place." Billie replied. She hit the send button and was now finished with all of her work.

"Well at least get a piece of cake before you leave."

"Fine I'll stay for one piece but then I'm leaving." Billie said.

"Oh, and there's a package for you up front."

She followed her colleague downstairs and grabbed a piece of red velvet birthday cake. She plastered a faux smile and made her rounds through the office. She did appreciate that her coworkers threw her an impromptu party, but she was just looking at her birthday as just another day. She stopped making a big deal about it since she was 16, because that's around the time her parents split up.

But it did warm her heart that people were going out of their way for her today. She got a surprise bash. Her boss not only gave her a bonus for her hard work, but she got good news about possibly going to the Cannes Film Festival. And the rest of the staff pooled together a great deal of money to get her a gift card to her newly preferred clothing store, Unique Vintage. So even though she hated being the center of attention, she was truly grateful.

She told everyone thank you. And before leaving the office, she met with the front desk receptionist, who gave her two envelopes, and a small box from Tiffany and Co., which left her feeling curious.

After being stuck in traffic, she finally arrived home and saw a gorgeous bouquet of bright red gerbera daisies on her doorstep. Since there was no card, she figured they must have been from her mom.

She went inside, kicked off her heels and unwrapped the rest of her gifts. She opened the first envelope, which was a lackluster card from her father. She was surprised that he actually remembered, but guessed that his secretary must have marked it off on his calendar. She tossed the card across the room, not wanting to feed into his bullshit.

She opened the next envelope, which was a heartfelt card from her mom, and inside were two tickets to WrestleMania. Billie was speechless because not only were they great seats, it was also out of character for her mom to buy something so extravagant. She tried calling her to say thanks, but when she didn't answer, she figured she was out playing Bingo and made it a point to try again later.
