I sat there looking out onto the open skyline of Sacramento, the cool November wind russled through my hair. The city was so beautiful, it's one of my favorite places we've lived.

I knew better than to think it would last, we would probably pick up and move to some random place where mom could afford rent.

I crawled back in through my open window that I know my mom would kill me if she knew I was out on the roof again.

I couldn't help it though it was way better than the chaotic house that was my reality. Ever since my dad left, its just been my mom, my brother Arlo and me and I liked it that way. I mean it would've been great to know my dad, but things happen for a reason.

"Haven?" my nosy brother slid open my door, without knocking of course. "One sec." I said as I climbed off of the ledge in my bathroom that led out onto the roof landing on the tile floor with a thud.

"Sis, you okay in there?" he questioned again

"Yup, just fine." I said as I waltzed out of the bathroom. He carefully studied me for a minute,"Yes?" I said sitting down at my laptop and powering it on. He flopped onto my twin mattress, "So how long do we have until I win my five dollars, aye?" he said letting out a small smile.

"Nice try, but you know I'm going to win." I said getting up and walking over to my U.S map, my most prized possession not only did it have special meaning because it was the last thing I got from my dad but it also had all the tacks marked in it for everywhere we'd lived. Red pins stood for where we thought we were headed next.

I thought it would be North Dakota but Arlo said it was going to be Ohio.
We had bets on when we were moving onto the next place, Arlo said she would cave in a week, I said she would cave sooner.

I know I have this in the bag, I heard mom on the phone with someone telling them when she was going to tell us. If my eavesdropping skills are as good as my roof climbing skills then it will be at dinner tonight.

I flopped next to him on the bed, ever since dad left he has been my best friend we had gone and done everything together. Him and mom are all I got, and I'm not the most social person so I don't have any school friends. I gave up after my eighth grade year, what's the point of making friends if you're going to end up moving who knows when and to go knows where. Sometimes Arlo's girlfriend CeCe comes and stays with us but I haven't seen her in a while.

I assume they either broke up or she found a guy who didn't have to use landlines and telephone booths to call her.

Stuck up Brat.

Her dad owns a lot of major companies in the U.S and she lives in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. I always hated her and how she always made my mom and Arlo feel bad because we weren't as rich as her.

My thoughts were interrupted by my mother calling us down for dinner, and I noticed Arlo was long gone. I skipped down the stairs almost tripping and falling down most of them. My long legs were not that great especially because with them I still stood firmly at 5"2, I'm always tripping over things.

"Dear lord Haven, please be careful I do not have the time or money to take you to the hospital." my mother shouted from the small kitchen area. "Wow great to know you care mom!" I shouted back. I heard my brother snicker from the living area. "Hey! Rude!" I shouted. I walked into the kitchen and mom was getting napkins for the pizza she ordered. My mom is a lot of things but she isn't a cook. If anyone in this house cooks its Arlo, I'm way to clumsy to be around an open flame.

"So guys," my mom started but stopped when Arlo interrupted her. "Damn." he mumbled and reached in his pocket. I had a wide grin on my face as I held out my hand with my palm facing upward. He slapped a five in my hand and grabbed a slice of pizza. "Really guys?" my mom said "You guys didn't even let me finish." she sighed. I raised my eyebrow at her.

"But were we wrong?" I said with a serious look on my face. "No." she mumbled. "Exactly." I said taking a bite of my pizza.

My brother slid his arm around our mother, "So where to now mama?" He said.

Her face lit up, "Ohio! Actually!!" I giggled.

Arlo raced up to my bedroom, he came back with a red tack. "Haha! I win." He shouted severely out of breath.

"Oh bite me." I said tossing my napkin in the trash.

I walked back up to my room and closed the door. I decided my packing can wait until tomorrow.

I slid under the covers and switched of my light.

Alone with my thoughts again, and again every night. I don't mind it so much it's nice to get some peace and quiet sometimes.

The busy streets of Sacramento, echoed in through the window, as I slipped into darkness.
