"And... Finished!" I cheered, spinning the girl round to face the mirror.
She beamed at me, admiring her new hair, "Thank you so much!" my pleased customer squealed.
I smiled to myself knowing that my family would be getting a decent meal today after the work i've done. After my customer left the salon pleased about her hair, I knew that was my cue to leave work and go home to my family hoping they would be pleased with the money I have made.
I exit the salon after collecting my daily pay and zip up my coat as its starting to get cold, as i walk down the road my surroundings begin to darken as the sky fades into a dark grey sunset. The cold air crept into my coat, making the hairs on my neck stand up. I could only afford a small coat and it was frail and old now. The sky got darker as my feet pounded the pavement, like a beat to a song. I didn't pay attention to my surroundings; I had taken this route home for almost 2 years now and I could walk home with my eyes closed. After what seemed like forever, I walked up the footsteps to my small apartment and unlocked the door.
I slammed the door shut behind me, not intending to slam it as loud as it appeared "Allie is that you?" my mother shouted above the noise of the washing machine "Yes its me" I replied walking into the kitchen to see my mum stood there with a worried look on her face.
"Whats wrong?" I asked, worried.
"we have no money to get anything to eat" she panicked. I smiled knowing that she will be relieved to hear my good news.
"Mum i earned £30 today" I smiled
"Oh thank god, really?! You know that I love you and that I'm so proud of you Allie" she kissed my forehead three times before hugging me.
"I love you too" I hummed
"I'll just pop out now and get us all dinner, you do so much for us Allie, thank you." My mum gushed, taking the money and hobbling out the door to get dinner.
Quickly, I walked into my little brothers bedroom and found him playing with his toy airplane, which I had bought him last year for his birthday. "Hey Josh, hungry?" I asked, sitting on the carpet, next to him.
He nodded ravenously and pushed his airplane across the floor, standing up weakly. I helped him to the living room - dining room and tucked his chair in. "Mummy will be home soon with dinner, Josh." I smiled, patting his head; he looked so happy - even in the circumstance we were in.
Suddenly, the door opened and mum came in, looking extremely happy with her bag of food in one hand, the change in the other. "Take it Allie." She said, putting the money in my hand.
"What? Why?" I ask confused on why she was giving me change which was supposed to be for the family. "Treat yourself, get some new shoes or hair dye." She grinned looking at my hair which I dyed months ago; my hair was a very light red dipped dyed at the bottom with blonde. you can't really see it now because it had faded but I loved it.
"Okay, I'll get some hair dye" I replied staring at the change in my hand, then looking up to my mother who had gone to the table with the food.
