Chapter 1
I wake up to the sound of my loud, and obnoxious alarm, reminding me that today is the first day of my senior year. Most people my age would dread the first day of school, but unlike them I'm ecstatic at the thought of seeing all my favourite teachers, and reconnecting with my friends I didn't see all summer.
I'm especially excited to see Carson, my best friend of 10 years, because I was unable to see him since his family went on a trip to Florida for all of summer.
I'm also really excited to see Luke, my boyfriend of a year. Although we spent almost everyday together this summer, I still feel butterflies in my stomach every time I see him. He is so perfect, I definitely do not deserve him.
I look at the clock and realize I zoned out for ten minutes thinking about the first day. I am now left with fifty minutes to get ready instead of an hour.
Seeing this I jump out of bed, throw open my bedroom door, and run across the hall to my bathroom. Once I'm in the bathroom I turn on the shower, and take a look in the mirror.
I don't remember getting punched last night, I think as I take a good look at myself in the mirror. My eyes have dark circles under them, my hair looks like a birds nest, and I look as pale as a vampire. "Ew, what happened last night," I speak my thoughts out loud.
I take off my clothes and jump in the shower to do my morning routine of washing my hair and body, and shaving my legs. After, I jump back out of the shower, dry off, and get dressed in a pair of dark blue jean shorts, a white V-neck T-shirt tucked into my shorts, and a brown braided belt. I let my hair dry into it's natural brown waves, and slip on a pair of pink Vans with white laces to match my top.
I pick up my backpack, making sure everything I need is in there, grab my iphone and headphones, and head downstairs. Checking my phone I see I have a couple minutes until I have to leave for school. I live in Los angeles, California meaning it's almost always warm, and it also means I walk to school everyday.
The walk to school takes about ten minutes, and school starts in twenty. So, I grab an apple, a granola bar, and a juice box to eat on the way there, and head out the door.
On my walk to school I say hi to a couple of my neighbors, listen to some of music, and appreciate my surroundings. Finally, I find myself walking up the front steps of Mulberry High.
Opening the doors I am greeted with the typical behavior that sums up teens and high school. Gossip about the summer, old friends squealing and hugging their hellos, new kids with their heads down trying to make their way around, and teachers looking all but happy to be here.
"Skye!" I hear my name being called by a familiar voice. I turn around to see my other best friend Emily running towards me. "Emmy!" I laugh as I'm tackled in a bear hug.
"I missed you sooo much!" She beamed. I look at her for a moment before we both burst out laughing. She was just at my house Saturday so we both know she's being sarcastic.
"I've missed you too Emily," I giggle, "It's been years!" She looks at me with an unimpressed face. "You know I hate being called Emily, it makes me sound old." She tries to be serious but the corner of her mouth starts to lift.
Then I feel a pair of arms wrap around my waist. "Guess who?" I feel warm breathe on my ear and shivers run down my back. I turn around in the persons arm to face Luke. "Lukey!" I greet him with a peck on the lips.
"Hey Cupcake," he pulls me in closer, "I missed you." Our faces are centimeters away, and I can start to feel the butterflies make another appearance, but were interrupted by Emily. "Um, hey guys, sorry but I'm still here." She informs us.
I roll my eyes and give Luke one more quick kiss before pulling away. "I have to go to my locker anyway," I turn towards Luke, "I'll see you at lunch, and I'll see you," I turn towards Emily, "In gym." I give them both a smile and start to walk away.
I find my locker on the second floor, and, because I'm a senior, I was able to keep my old locker meaning it has my lock already on it. My locker is right beside Carson's but I don't see him there so I'm guessing he hasn't arrived yet.
When I finish putting the books I don't need in my locker I close the door, and as I'm about to turn around I hear it. "Skye!" A very familiar voice yells. I turn around and am shocked at what I see.
It's Carson and Florida has definitely changed him.
