-Chapter 1-

I was in my room putting on my gown. It was a scarlet red with snowy white accents. As I finished putting it on I started playing with my messy hair.

I had dirty blond hair and baby blue eyes. I decided to put my hair up into an elegant bun or at least I tried to make it elegant. I then let two curled strands fall around my face. I put some smoky eyeshadow on and a tad bit of ruby red eye shadow to go along with my dress even though I would be wearing a mask. It was a royal tradition to wear a mask at all the masquerades that were held at the palace.

My Father was invited to a ball because he worked for the king, King Anthony. He was a vampire. I shivered at the thought of his name.

King Anthony was a cruel vampire. If things weren't done his way then the man or women that didn't follow his orders would be punished. My father came home with whip marks on his back because he didn't listen to the King's instructions about the way the flowers were positioned in the garden. After that day my dad never made that mistake again.

I carefully put on my black earrings and other accessories. Then I slipped on my mask. It was a darker crimson red with night black sequins outlining the eyes and the whole outer mask and in the corner there was a big black feather. Following that I put on my inky black 5-inch heels.

"Madeline," my mother shouted," Let's go we are leaving."

"I'm coming Mother," I yelled back. I took one last look in the mirror and smiled. I looked stunning I thought. I ran out of my room and into the carriage waiting outside for us. My family and I sat in silence. It wasn't much of a family though. It was only mother, my father, and I.

I had a younger sister named Sarah but she died at the age of 6 years old. She got sick and since my family didn't have enough money for medicine all we could do was wait until she passed. I felt so bad watching her suffer. She was young, healthy, and adorable until the age of 4. That is when all the changes started happening. Sarah lost all the color in her face and slowly got weaker by each month that passed. I remember the times when we had fun together running through the garden smiling and watching the clouds.

~ Madeline's Flashback~

It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the sky was a powdery blue with chalky white clouds covering parts of the sky. It had to be at least 70 degrees out. Sarah and I took off our shoes and darted across the yard letting the grass squish between our toes. We were laughing and giggling. I chased her around the lawn and then an idea came to me.

"Hold on, I'll be right back," I said to her. I raced back inside the house and snatched a big blanket and ran back outside. I laid it across the ground. I sat on it.

"Come here," I said and patted the spot next to me. She lyed there with me and we named all the shapes of the clouds.

"That one is a butterfly," she said to me and pointed to one of the clouds.

"No, I think it’s a grape with a horn sitting next to a flower," I said correcting her. Sarah and I burst out laughing and rolled all over the blanket just cracking up.
