I plug the waffle iron in, letting it heat up, when a rusty voice comes in behind us, "there's my favorite grandchildren!" She knew he was here? Did mom?
"G' Morning, Mamaw!" I grin as she squeezes my shoulder.
"Hey, Mamaw Burke!" Traeh chuckles, as she goes in for a hug.
"Hey, Mamaw..." I start, pouring the waffle batter into the iron, closing the lid, "where's mom?"
Her happy smile fades with a sigh. Not good, not good, "I'm not going to lie to you, she isn't here. She left... again. She was heading to California."
I sigh deep, "great." Traeh wraps his arms around my waist and kisses the top of my head. I smile sheepishly, Mamaw laughing at us.
"I better be getting to work, play safe, use protection, all that." She jokes, my cheeks heat up and I feel Traeh tense a bit, "I am kidding!" No she isn't.
"Bye, Mamaw! Have fun!" She gives me a mock Look of Death and I giggle.
"Love you, kids!"
"Love you!" Traeh and I respond in unison.
As soon as the door closes, the waffle iron 'ding's and Traeh and I take one waffle each.
♡♡♡
"Where are we going today?" I ask Traeh, pulling my brown- red hair to the side in a braid and securing it.
"It's a surprise!" He chuckles, pulling on his 'Keep Calm + Mayday On' shirt.
I roll my eyes, knowing he isn't going to budge from his surprise, "Fine." meaning, oh my god please please tell me!
"Ready to go?" He asks, lacing his fingers lacing with mine.
I nod, him following me down the stairs.
As soon as I'm about to head out the door, my phone goes off to the sounds of Mayday Parade's "12 Through 15"
"Hello?"
"Uhm, yes. Is this Alexia Burke?"
"This is she."
"Ma'am, I regret to inform you, your grandmother Eliza Burke has been in an accident."
"Wh-what?" The breath knocks out of me. Traeh looks at me with concern. I had him the phone. But I can still hear the woman's cruel words.
"-- she had a Myocardial infarction whilst behind the wheel and a car hit her head on."
"What room?"
"201-B"
"Thank you. " He hangs up the phone with a click and looks at me, talking slowly. His tears red with unshed tears, "We have to go. Now."
