The birds would sing their morning melody in the pink atmosphere. The sun lit the field, revealing it's blossoming flowers, and the small creatures living among them. The distant trees swayed calmly with the soft breeze; it was a very peaceful morning for those living around the area, especially for the farm animals A red barn contrasted with the natural habitat around them, but it caused no harm.
Living among the barn, was a middle aged man, and a few animals, such as the ducks, or the cows. But specifically, this was the home of a female dog, a Collie. She was responsible for herding the sheep with her owner. At the moment, she was leaving the shelter of the barn to do her job. But before she could do so, she had stopped to give her goodbyes to her two pups, both large adolescent females.
"Do you have to go so soon?" one asked, her yellow gaze lowered with disappointment. The Collie chuckled, her sweet amber gaze staring upon her. "Well of course my love. I am a farm dog after all." she would lick the pup's dark grey nose, who gave a weak smile in return. Her motherly gaze turned to her other daughter, "Keep her out of trouble, dear." The pup's blue eyes were calm, and mature, "Of course, Mother. I always get the job done!" The Collie nuzzled her cheek gently, "I know you do." As she bonded with her puppies, a voice called her. "Betsy!" Ears perked, she raised her head assertively, as her owner called her name, proceeding to trot out of the barn quickly, "I should be back in an hour or two. Take care of yourselves!" The two watched their mother dash out into the clearing until she was out of sight.
One of the pups, the brown stubborn female, plopped her small physique grumpily on the ground, "She always has to leave. Why can't she stay for once?" The other one, a black pup with white contrasting markings, rolled her eyes. "She has to herd the sheep, remember?" the brown pup whirled on her, "Well duh! What I mean is, why does she have to herd sheep all the time? She never has enough time to stay with us." the black pup averted her gaze, "I.. well she... huh." she turned it towards the outside of the barn, taking a moment to think her words through. After doing so, she returned her gaze to her sister. "Flutter, I get that you want more attention from Mother, I do too.. but she has a job to do on the farm, that we'll probably learn eventually."
Flutter widened her eyes, "Moon, we should've been learning that ages ago," she barked. "Now, we're almost as big as Mother, if not, the same height! There has to be some reason we're being held back from herding." Moon grunted, shaking her black pelt of the strands of hay that clung to it. "You're over exaggerating," she snorted, settling on her stomach. "If we are being held back, it might be because of your big loud mouth." Moon held a sassy grin, canines gleaming as if they agreed to the statement. "Moaning all day and night about how you hate the Barn."
Flutter growled, pouncing on her, "You take that back!" she barked, with a small hint of playfulness. I'll show her! Moon's eyes widened as she received a tackle from her sister. "Never!" she yelped gleefully, recovering quickly from the shock. It had been a while, and the two lost track of time. The pups were still play fighting by noon. They rolled on the ground as they scuffled playfully, strands of hay coating their pelts. It wasn't until they crashed into a large hay pile that they broke from their tussel. The yellow scraps covered the floor like the first snowfall in winter.
Flutter glanced at Moon, noticing her look of shock, and discomfort as she resurfaced from the pile. "What? Are you hurt?" she shook her head, frowning. "Nope. I'm just kinda worried now. Mother's going to be frustrated with us when she sees this mess." Rolling her eyes, the brown adolescent nudged her sister's flank. "Relax Moon," she yipped with reassurance. "You'll be just fine. Mother only gets mad if we provoke the animals or leave the Barn." Moon gave her a side glance, "Yeah, I know. You do those all the time." the black pup stepped out of the hay pile hastily, shaking most of the contrasting yellow strands off her dark coat. "You also admire the forest a lot," Moon then turned to stare at her sister with curiosity, "What's so interesting about it anyway? You've never been in it."
Flutter took a breath, joining her sister out of the hay pile, not bothering to shake the strands off her pelt. "It's just so fascinating," she replied distantly. "Mother tells us stories about the forest all the time. How there's a pack out there, that survives by taking down animals as big as the cows!" Flutter paused for a moment, before continuing, "I don't know, really.. I just kinda want to give life in the forest a go, you know? I'm tired of this stupid barn. There's never anything interesting here anymore." Moon sighed deeply, resting her nose on her shoulder. "Flutter," she began. "Sure the forest looks kind of cool, but it's dangerous. Here, we don't have to worry about any mean wolves, or other savage creatures."
Flutter groaned, shaking her head. She opened her mouth to protest, "That's my point! I want something to live for now. I feel like there's a calling for both of us in there." she rose to her paws, looking down at her sister. "Moon, I know you, and you're stubborn when it comes to admitting something."
"Am not!"
"Oh really?"
"Yes! Mother would never allow it."
"Mother doesn't control our fates."
Flutter had a smirk on her face. "Come on sis, just one adventure out of the Barn. You're just as tired of being here as I am, I can see it in your eyes." Moon hesitated for moment, her ears pinned, and her face scrunched thoughtfully. With a sigh, she nodded slowly. "Okay.. But only for a small look."
Flutter's paws tingled with a newfound excitement. "You're the best!" she yipped gleefully. "When do you wanna do it? Now?" Moon snorted, her dark blue eyes amused, "No bonehead. Mother will be back anytime soon now. If we're going to go, it's safer by tomorrow morning. She shouldn't be herding tomorrow." Flutter narrowed her eyes. "And you know that how?" she scoffed, flicking her tail, doubtful of the estimation. Her sister would sit up, gazing at the Barn's ceiling. "Well, I watch the moon sometimes," she replied, a soft smile emitting from her white muzzle. "It's kinda cool. The moon changes shape everyday. They seem to herd every day after a full moon." Flutter tilted her head, fascinated. That's Moon. The smartest dog I know!
Flutter nodded, "Alright, cool! I'm just happy you want to go with me." Moon grunted, lying on her side. "Yeah, but we're not staying long." she yawned. "Besides, if something did come up, at least I know where Mother can retrieve your body at."
