Chapter One: The Time Turner
Harry laid uncomfortably in his bed, with many things on his mind. His scar was hurting, which at this time was very unusual. His last encounter with Lord Voldemort was last year, when the Chamber of Secrets was opened, though it wasn't with Voldemort himself. That was with Tom Riddle, a form of Voldemort that was created by the Horcrux diary that he created.
The thought that some wand-wielding man who'd been in Azkaban Prison for twelve years was out to kill him would cause his mind (or anyone's mind for that matter) to go restless. Harry wanted to change this, but it took quite a lot of physical and mental effort.
After laying down for about an hour, Harry gave up, accepting that his mind was unwilling to rest. As he walked down to the Common Room, he stepped on something. At first glance, it appeared to be a necklace. It had a long, gold chain, and hung onto it was a rotating hourglass. He picked up the necklace and continued down the stairs.
"What are you doing up?"
"I couldn't sleep," jumped Harry, now noticing that Hermione was sitting in one of the arm chairs, working on the mountains of homework she had accumulated mysteriously throughout the day. Harry was amazed that she was able to work by only the light of a candle, and the fire burning five feet away. "I found this on the floor on my way down," Harry held up the object.
Hermione started grabbing at her chest, feeling for something. "Give me THAT."
"Well what is it?" Harry questioned as he pulled away. "And how do I know it's yours?"
"It's called a Time Turner. Professor McGonagall lent it to me for the year. See that hourglass?" she said somewhat angrily. "It rotates. However many times you turn it, the further back in time it takes you. One turn is one hour. That's why I have all of this homework..." she was interrupted in mid-sentence by Ron Weasley, who'd just walked into the room.
"...And why you've been showing up out of nowhere."
Hermione continued, "Exactly. I've been using it so I can take more classes."
Professor McGonagall was a strict woman, the Head of the Gryfffindor House, and was the complete opposite of Professor Snape. Snape was also a strict person, but only with people who weren't in Slytherin. Beside that point, McGonagall liked Hermione, and lent her the Time Turner for her academic progress.
"My scar's been stinging," Harry changed the subject as he gave Hermione the Time Turner.
"Why?" Hermione asked somewhat timidly as she put the Time Turner into her robes.
"Now think about it... My scar hasn't hurt when nothing bad happened afterwards. And besides, would you be able to sleep knowing that there were two people out to kill you? Would you be able to sleep knowing that there are hundreds of people bending backwards for your life? You have no idea how much of a burden I feel like to everybody, and also to be pointed at and made fun of like some freak... I may be the boy who lived, but I'm still just as normal as you are, Hermione," he snapped, as though he hadn't slept in weeks.
Both Ron and Hermione stood in astonishment. Harry was at his breaking point. There was silence between the three of them for the next few minutes, until Hermione said something.
"I'm sorry, Harry. I- I never knew what sort of troubles you've had outside of Hogwarts or anywhere. I get made fun of for being Muggle-born, and for my intelligence. Other than that, I want to show you something," she whispered as she pulled the Time Turner back out of her pocket.
