I tap my pen on my notebook as I stare out of the window. Mr Davis, our professor in Algebra, says things which my mind can't comprehend right now. My mind is occupied with thoughts of Chad.
How did I know him? When and where did our feelings for each other start? I'm pretty sure what I'm feeling for him right now is what I felt before, like I'll be crazy if a day pass by I'm not with him. Then how did I forget about him?
"Miss Grey." I got startled when Mr. Davis tap his finger on my desk. I didn't notice him come near me.
"Y-Yes, sir?" I stammered.
"Can you answer the question?" he eyed me. Damn! What was the question? I looked at the white board to check if there is an equation which is not yet solved. I looked at Mr Davis again and saw impatience in his face.
"I'm sorry, sir. What was the question again?" I nervously asked.
"That's exactly my point, Ms. Grey. What do you think is the question?" He fixed his eye glasses on the bridge of his nose.
I pursed my lips and looked down at the floor. "I'm sorry, sir."
The whole class was so quiet. They must all be wondering why a student who always can answer any professor's question is now a student who doesn't even know what the question is. The school bell rang and I thank God it did.
"Before you all go, do not forget about the homework I gave you last week," he said as he walks towards his desk. I look at Katie and she gave me a questioning look. "Last day of submission will be on the last week of this month. You are all dismissed."
I place my things back in my bag and stood up to meet Katie. Before I could come near her, Mr Davis called my attention. Katie raised her phone telling me she'll just text me later.
Once all students got out of the room, I sighed and walk towards Mr Davis. He smiled over his thick eye glasses and leaned his back on his chair.
I took a deep breath, knowing the idea of what this discussion is about. "I'm so sorry for what happened earlier, sir. If you could just tell me the question, I might give you an exact answer to it."
His smile is warm and friendly. He pushed his glasses back to his nose. "You can't answer the question, Ms Grey."
"I can answer it, Mr Davis. Give me a chance to prove it."
"You can't, Ms Grey," he stared at me and I felt intimidated. "You can't simply because there was no question."
I was taken aback at what he said. My eyebrows mushed, trying to comprehend what he is saying.
"You were distracted, Ms Grey. Not just today. You've been spacing out in my class these days." He does something with his laptop. After checking what it is he is checking, he faced his laptop to me. There are some red marks on my grades.
"This is the standing of your grade starting this semester," he said as he faced his laptop to him again. "And last week's quiz didn't go well, too."
He tilted his head back up at me. "Since this last semester began, your grades begin to slip. I want you to succeed, Emily."
"I know, Mr Davis," I said. I know that I am distracted these days. Distracted by job applications. Distracted by the thoughts of my mother, on when she will acknowledge my achievements. And most of all, I'm distracted thinking of Chad all the time. Just the thought of him makes me want to run to him right now.
Of course, I won't talk to my Algebra professor about my issues. They weren't any of his business. I gave him a vague response in return. "I'm sorry I'm distracted. There are a lot of things happening this semester."
