Chapter Fifteen – How Come…?
I jumped up surprised. I gasped for air as I found myself grabbing for it. I coughed as I was breathless. What was that?
Was that the night of the party? Oh my god… I was so into that. How? I blushed as I realized how I was acting. Could that have been just a dream or…? I grabbed my coffee off the counter that I had made and poured it into my coffee mug.
I jumped, almost spilling my hot drink, when someone knocked at the door. I looked over at the front door as my heart paced. They knocked again.
“Hold on, I’ll be right there.” I yelled as I put down my mug.
I walked over to the door and opened the door slowly. Seeing who it was, I said, “Oh, hey you.”
“’Oh, hey you?’ What kind of thing is that to say to your best friend?” Robin yelled at me. I smiled sheepishly.
“I missed you, you idiot!” she cried as she hugged me tightly. “It’s been over a week since I’ve seen you! Why aren’t you going to school? Did that idiot Lucien tell you not to?”
I pulled away from her. “I’m sorry,” I tell her as I frown sadly. “He is the reason why I’m not going to school. But I’m going back next week okay?” I smiled.
“Danny, we need to talk.” She told me.
“About?”
“You can’t be with Lucien,” She began and I looked at her a bit upset. “At least not right now.”
“What? Why?” I reply, confused.
“The boss is coming…” She said, looking slightly scared for once. “His dad is coming back from his meeting that was on last year.”
I froze. Mr. Grey was back from the meeting? Ok, this meeting Robin is talking is one that basically protected us from other powerful mafia members. He went to fight them with most of his mafia members and left his only son Lucien to protect the land from drifters. Lucien here was known for his beauty and his brutality. But he was nothing compared to his father… nothing.
A cold shiver went up my spine. I began to pull Robin inside. “It’s not safe out there right now. You know how it gets with Mr. Grey’s mafia members.” I pulled her inside. The mafia members were also known to be brutal but they were all third in line from Lucien and Mr. Grey.
Mr. Grey and Lucien find everyone to be family, so we are respected by them, but when it comes to the underlings, they don’t care. They walk around thinking they’re big shot. Mr. Grey has never caught the underlings being mean to the people and citizens, but if he did catch them I’m sure he’d whack them for sure.
After bringing Robin inside, we sat down in the living room and sat in silence.
“So, how did you find out about the boss?” I ask.
“Lucien announced it the city a few hours ago… weren’t you watching the news?” She asked.
I sighed. “No, today I woke up late.” I ran a hand through my hair. “What am I gonna do about this whole thing?”
“I don’t know, but you can’t let Mr. Grey know that Lucien has taken a liking to you.”
“But why?” I reply. “Is it really so bad?” that was stupid. Of course it’s bad. I could never live the life style of a mafia. How do I live my life normally after Lucien came into it?
“Look, Danny.” She crouched over and put her elbows on her knees. “I know you like Lucien and all, but you need to give on him. He lives a life of war and terror. He’ll know the day he will die, but he’s ready for it any day. Now for you, you’re not ready to live that life style.
“He’s not for you. Please look for someone else. That asshole is only trouble for you…. I just don’t want you to get hurt by him.” She dropped her face into her palms and sighed. “Please just don’t talk to him anymore.”
I was shocked. Don’t talk to him? Ever? But the deal wasn’t over yet. I still needed at least 4 more days. I started to freak out. What was I gonna do? How was this going to end for me? Was I gonna just give up?
