Chapter 23: Buttoned-Up Brother and Her Tear-Streaked Face.

Lynsey's POV:

After Ryan asked to make sure, that for certain, I was one-hundred percent, completely okay… multiple times... he went to call his mother. He refused to go home tonight, dead set on staying in the guest room, even though Shawn was here now. I argued that I was fine, but he wouldn't give in. I was secretly happy about this.

I chugged some more water before the bottle was empty and asked Shawn to grab me another bottle… or two from the fridge. Shawn smiled and got up to go and get me more from the kitchen.

“Alright mom. Okay. Yeah, I’m sorry mom. Mom, I’m sorry. Yes again. Mom… okay. Alright. I know. Alright. Bye.”

I smiled over at Ryan, who was coming in from outside, and gave him a fake pout when he looked at me, “You didn’t tell her you loved her this time.”

He started to laugh, only to have me join him a couple seconds later.

“But seriously, don’t you love your mommy?” I mocked, a little bit.

“Of course.” he said, still laughing, “Of course I love her.”

He sat on his knees on the floor next to me. I smiled, “So are you staying?”

“Yup.” he started, “Even if she said I couldn’t I still would’ve stayed to make sure you are okay through the night.”

I flopped back on the chair with a sigh, “ I told you I’m fiiiiine.”

“Yeah, I know you told me,” he edged closer, “but I just want to make sure.”

“Mhmmm.” I pressed my lips into a straight line.

Shawn appeared in the corner of my vision, “Water!”

I whipped my head around towards him sticking my hands out and reaching for the refreshing beverage, “Yes! Give me! Give me! Give me!”

Shawn brought the water over to me as both the boys laughed as I chugged it, what can I say? I was thirsty.

Ryan’s POV:

After Lynsey drank an ocean of water, we turned on the television and watched a couple shows. I looked over at Lynsey a while later and she was sleeping. I smacked Shawn’s shoulder (he was on the opposite side of the couch) and pointed to Lynsey, smiling.

“Finally.” he whispered as he got up and swiped his hand through his hair, “Hey, Ryan?”

“Yeah?” I asked, still looking at Lynsey.

“I need you to umm…” he cleared his throat softly, “cover for me?”

“What? Why?” I stood up, still whispering because I didn’t want to wake Lynsey.

He looked at me shyly, “Please?”

I looked over at Lynsey and back to his pleading eyes, “Okay.”

“Thank you!” I patted my shoulder, “Just keep an eye on her for me, please. My mom isn’t coming home tonight and I’m… not sure if I will be either.” he rubbed the back of his neck. I looked at him suspiciously, but he slipped on his coat and out the door before I could utter another word. I just stared at the door for a few moments.

I looked over at Lynsey, who was still peacefully asleep, and smiled. I walked over to her and brushed some hair gently off of her forehead. I kept wondering if I should bring her to her bed or to the guest bed, which was much closer plus was a queen sized bed, so it would be much more comfortable for her. I turned off the television and walked to the guest bedroom to pull the comforter off before I brought her there so that I could lay her in easier. I walked back over to her and gently put my arms under her, picking her up, and carrying her bridal style to the bedroom. It wasn’t difficult, she really didn’t weigh a lot at all even with the cast. I laid her down on the bed, placing her head gently on the pillow. I grabbed the covers and tucked her in, pushing some of the hair that found its way back to her face back. I traced my finger from her forehead to her cheek, admiring her beauty as she slept. (Does this make me sound like a weirdo? Ah… oh well.) I bent down and lightly kissed her cheek, afraid that if I kissed her lips she would awaken. I walked towards the door and looked back, smiled, and headed to the kitchen for a bottle of water. I went back to the living room and saw a book on the table, Murder at Midnight. Shrugging, I picked it up making sure that the bookmark didn’t fall out. Around page 67 I heard a noise coming from the guest room. I quickly closed the book and set it on the table, hurtling towards the room.

Lynsey was sitting up with her head in her hands, rocking back and forth.

“Lynsey?” I said walking towards her.

Her head shot up and I saw her eyes were completely red and puffed up.

“Oh my God…” I whispered.

She waved her hand to come over, since I hadn’t moved an inch. I stood in the same space for a couple of seconds, just looking at her. She started to cry harder, bringing her hands back to her face. I ran over to the bed and sat down next to her, placing my hand on her shoulder. Within seconds she looked over at me and pulled me into a hug, resting her head on my shoulder, letting out her tears. She was crying so hard, and I didn’t know why or how to help. I just hugged her back, burying my face in her hair. After a couple of minutes, when her breathing stopped scattering and she wasn’t crying as hard she brought her head up off my shoulder and traced her hands from my back to my cheeks. I kept my arms wrapped around her waist as she looked me in the eyes with her bloodshot, red ones that still bestowed so much beauty. She swiped my cheeks with her thumbs, deep in thought.  She searched my face before focusing on my lips; I gave her a small smile, but a couple tears were still falling from her cheeks, making my heart break. She continued to look at my lips, then back to my eyes as she leaned forward and pulled me in so our lips touched, sending sparks through my lips and making my stomach flip. It was a short kiss before she pulled away to look me back in the eyes, stroking my cheeks yet again, sitting in silence for a couple minutes she pulled me in for another hug, nuzzling her face into my neck.

I tried pulling away after a little while, telling her she needed her sleep.

She just hugged me tighter and I felt her hot breath on my neck as she mumbled to me, "Please don't leave."

I nodded assuring her that I wasn't going anywhere, "Never."

I laid her down on the bed yet again when she loosened from the hug and she held my hand, tears only falling out of her eyes every once in a while. She looked up at me innocently, giving me a weak grin before pulling me gently down towards her. I laid down facing her, still holding her hand. She moved to her side to face me, with her giant cast hitting the surface of the bed and the other one placed on top, bent at the knee a little bit. I made my way a little closer to her so that I could wrap my arms around her and place my chin on top of her head. She nuzzled her face into my chest and placed one of her arms over my side, gripping onto the back of my shirt. “Thank you.” she whispered.

“No need.” I whispered back, kissing the top of her head, “I told you I would be here whenever you need me, always.”

She let out a little laugh, “Always.”

I felt Lynsey fall asleep in my arms and now that she was sleeping, I, myself, was able to lull asleep easily. I could feel her warmth on my body and the smell of her shampoo filled my nose. It was so calm in the room, so peaceful. It was so nice. I closed my eyes and just thought about what had happened throughout the day before I drifted off.
