CHAPTER ONE (unedited)

I laughed as I watched my best friend strut around my room, wearing the tallest heels of mine, pouting excessively.

She stumbled and tripped landing flat on her face.

Snorting with laughter I rolled off my bed, falling and landing on top of her on the floor.

We cackled with laughter again and I didn't notice the boy standing in my room watching us with a smile on his face, but Grace did.

"Hey, Dan," She spluttered, as we both tried to stop laughing, but failed, rolling around on my carpet again.

"They won't believe that you two are eighteen if you act like that" He commented, folding his arms and lifting an eyebrow.

I raised an eyebrow back, putting a hand on my hip, "Of course they will, club bouncers love me." I joked, twirling my hair around my finger and batting my eyelashes, "also I am eighteen you idiot, I hope you didn't forget my birthday again."

He stayed in the same pose, same facial expression and I could tell he knew it bugged me because he looked at me with a sly look hiding behind his eyes.

"I didn't forget last year, Lain, my present just hadn't arrived yet. And it was your birthday last week, how could I forget with you making a fuss all month." He bit back, harsher than I'm sure he intended to be, and I could see Grace shifting uncomfortably in the corner of my eye.

"It must be my natural allure." I smiled cheekily, trying to make him laugh back or even smile, holding back the embarrassment in my stomach that came from him calling out my excitement for my birthday month. I guess it was kinda stupid, but I loved birthdays.

It was as though he didn't even understand the playful tone I was using.

He simply shook his head as though he were talking to a child.

"Are you two nearly ready?" He moved his gaze to Grace, scanning her face quickly before moving back to me.

His caramel coloured hair was perfectly styled and I smiled at how handsome and 'put together' he looked - nothing out of place - his green eyes sparkled as he moved his gaze back and forth between me and Grace, and I couldn't help the warm comforting feeling inside of me, something that always came with Dan.

He was comfortable.

He was safe.

Dan was the type of boy you'd want to bring home to your parents - he was honestly every parent's wet dream. With perfect grades, literally, he managed to receive an A* in every subject he took for A-Levels and GCSEs, he was also going to Oxford next year to study medicine as he wanted to be a doctor.

On top of it all, he maintained great social skills, so at most parties, we were the couple who went around socialising with everyone - though he was more reserved and poised, I was the one making new friends and dancing on tables with Grace.

He was the golden boy. My golden boy.

I pushed myself up and took two small steps towards Dan, he leaned down and kissed me, my arms twining around his neck as he held my waist lightly.

Grace coughed unsubtly and we broke apart. I looked across at him and he returned my smile before turning and smiling at Grace.

I ignored the temptation to huff at my boyfriend as I walked back to Grace, "Yeah, we'll be like half an hour at most." He shot me an exasperated look at my reply as I shooed him out of the room.
