Chapter 1:
“You seriously can’t be doing this to me!” I yelled.
“I’m sorry, dear, but you are going through with this whether you like it or not,” my step-mother smirked.
“Daddy, please tell me this all just a prank?” I begged.
“Sammy, baby, I am afraid this is happening,” my father sighed.
I bit my lip to keep from sobbing. I turned sharply on my heel and ran to my room. I slammed the door shut and fell on my bed. A knock on my door brought me out of my misery.
“Sammy, is it true you’re getting married?” my younger twin siblings asked.
I nodded. “Yeah, it’s true.”
“If the guy is mean to you, just call us. We’ll kick his butt,” Jesse sneered.
I giggled. Jesse and Jason were not fighters. But I loved that they were trying to cheer me up. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have my brothers.
“Samantha, get dressed! Your fiancé will be here soon!” the evil step-mother called.
I groaned, but walked into my closet. I had to find an outfit the step-monster would approve of. I might as well please her. Ah, who am I kidding? She makes me miserable! After finding the perfect outfit, I did my make-up; it was something that I hadn't done since...well, never mind.
“Samantha!” the monster yelled.
I flinched and made my way downstairs. As I rounded the corner, I couldn’t believe who I saw standing there. There was just no way this was happening.
“No, I am not marrying him! You can’t make me do this!” I exclaimed, making a turn for my room.
At the same time he yelled, “You didn’t tell me I had to marry her!”
My step-mother was fuming. “Samantha, you will marry Thomas.”
“There’s a reason Tommy and I are no longer friends,” I muttered. “Let alone a couple.”
Instead of going back to my bedroom, I headed to the twin’s room. Jesse and Jason were sitting on Jason’s bed. They looked like they had been crying.
“Boys, what’s wrong?” I asked, kneeling in front of them.
“You’re leaving us,” Jason cried.
“Hey, I’m not leaving voluntarily,” I choked back a sob and wiped Jason’s tears away.
Jesse looked at me. He always was the stronger of the two. “But why does it have to be Tommy?”
I shrugged. “It’s probably because our step-mother said so and Daddy won’t do anything to disappoint her.”
“But, why Tommy? After everything he has done to us! Everything he has done to you!” Jesse and Jason said. “We didn’t think she was that cruel.”
I smiled sadly, knowing exactly why they were this upset. But there was no reasoning with the devil. It would only end up with me getting even more hurt. I pulled the boys into a hug and the tears I had been trying to hold back rolled down my face.
“Sammy, its time for you to pack your bags,” my dad said, now standing in the doorway of the room.
“Wait, what? Pack? Why do I have to pack?” I asked, standing up. Jesse and Jason grabbed my hands.
My dad looked remorseful. He didn’t want me to go. “Baby girl, you are leaving with Thomas to go stay with his family in Florida.”
“No!” the twin’s screamed.
“Samantha,” my dad rarely used my whole first name. “Don’t make this harder than it already is. Go pack!”
I ran from the room and locked my door behind me. Tears were pouring down my face. I walked back into my closet and took off my pretty dress. Not like I wore it for long. If I was leaving, I was going to be leaving in clothes I was deemed comfortable.
I packed everything I thought was necessary, though I was reluctant. A knock on my door made me snap my head up. I went over and unlocked it. I wasn’t expecting to see him standing there; a smirk on the face I once loved. I rolled my eyes and walked back towards my bed. Of course, he followed.
“I see you’re wearing the engagement ring,” Tommy was still smirking.
I looked down at my hand. The she-witch was making me wear it. Until this evening, I hadn’t even realized that it was an engagement ring. And though I wanted to take it off, a really tiny part of me didn’t.
“What do you want, Tommy?” I asked.
He sneered. “I want to set a couple things straight. You will marry me and you will not complain. You play the role of the doting wife and let me do my own thing. You get in my way; I will make sure you are gone before the divorce papers are ever signed.”
“Leave our sister alone,” the twin’s demanded, showing up in my doorway.
“Jesse and Jason, how…nice,” Tommy rolled his eyes. “Now, shoo!”
I can’t believe him. “Tommy, I don’t care if you’re mean to me. But do not be a jerk to my brother’s.”
“And why shouldn’t I” he asked innocently.
“You know very well why,” I whispered, memories of that day playing in my head.
“Oh right, I remember,” he grinned sadistically. I can’t believe he’s changed so much.
“I beg of you, don’t bring it up,” I pleaded as he opened his mouth to talk again.
Jesse and Jason were frozen in fear and I knew that the same memories I had playing in my mind were playing in theirs. It was something that no one should have to witness, let alone relive every time you go to sleep.
Just as the first couple tears fell, I pulled them to me. “Don’t cry, please.”
For once, Tommy looked shocked; as if he couldn’t believe he was bringing this up either. “Sam, I’m…”
I snapped. “Just go! You’ve done enough damage.”
Tommy left quickly and I sighed. That night, I spent the last few hours in my own bed. And I had my brother’s curled into my sides. I dreaded leaving them. What happened when Tommy and I were younger kept repeating over and over again.
